I think that the wake up will be inevitable when capitalism fails. In America your main problem is that there are plenty of places and spaces to run to.
In the UK, where I live, we are already grossly overpopulated, and in a financial meltdown (it is happening) we would pressured enough just to feed and look after half of our white population, so I do fear for the future of our country.

I have to disagree. A strongman was sure to come to the fore in Germany, but Hitler was an aberration even among totalitarian strongmen. Cromwell wasn't nearly as bad, nor was Stalin (I wrote an essay on this one.) Kill Hitler and someone like Mussolini, the Italian Fascist leader, might have come to power; he was dangerous but not genocidal. Italy actually harbored Jews during WWII despite being allied to Germany.

When you take out the eugenics, the Aryan nonsense (it's not even a real race; they pulled it out of a myth) and the aggressive foreign policy Nazism no longer has a leg to stand on. If you'd said fascists instead of Nazis you might have had a chance at defending yourself, but 'kill the Jews' and 'Germans are better than everyone else" was pretty much the sum of Nazism.
The 'technology of death' was only important because Hitler wanted to kill all the Jews as quickly as possible. Cromwell had the time; if he'd really wanted to he could have totally purged Ireland, and he at least had the decency to insist he wasn't killing civilians. Hitler bragged about it. It's like Germany rolled a pair of dice and got a three. Yeah, it could have been worse, but not much and not likely. While it's true antisemitism was rampant at the time, most people (even Germans, before he got into power) thought Hitler was a raving lunatic (of course, better to support the lunatic than the commies, right?)
Also, the gas chambers weren't all that high tech; just a big closed off room you dropped cyanide tablets into. Nobody had thought of using that stuff to kill before.
As for Stalin, yeah, he was a paranoid nut who had people killed for things like being the last to stop clapping for him. But keep in mind, Hitler ruled for much, much less time than Stalin and racked up a higher kill count. If Hitler had ruled as long as Stalin there'd be no Jews left in Europe.
The only allowance I'll make to the 'it could have been worse' argument is that they might have gotten a military genius. Hitler micromanaged his generals way to much, and, though it got him past the Maginot Line, it lost him the Battle of Britain (hey, lets stop bombing air fields and go for London. That'll make the Brits want to give up all right.)
