"Laughing Out Loud".

Whether people actually laugh out loud when they write it though is a different matter. I wouldn't trust it too much.

Slowburn, you should try posting a topic like this in general so you get the most response to your questions like this.

I never really understand this shortening of terms. I don't understand texting really. Why not just ring the person up and leave a message if they don't answer?

That would require talking

I hate calling people (I don't do it unless absolutely necessary), and I hate leaving messages on answering machines even more. I would much rather prefer to email someone (thought I don't use all those abbreviations and everything), and if I don't have access to a computer, texting is my next choice. I found out when I joined here that aversions to talking on telephones is actually quite common among Aspies.

"Much rather prefer" seems kind of redundant.

Also, it should read "though I don't" rather than "thought I don't"...

Ringing somebody can be hell. I really hate doing it. I also leaving messages is just as bad because it has the added element of talking to nobody, which I hate.
Texting is alot better and without it, it would be quite difficult for people to get in touch with me.

Add a hate between 'also' and 'leaving'. There are alot of 'hates' in my post but hate doesn't really come close to how much I despise talking on a phone.

ooops That's "Thanks" if you type in the dark!
Special thanks to Mish, Terminology is a big bugbear to me especially when people don't realise that they're using it; I'm sure others must have similar problems e.g.
"Transfers" means something different to an Occupational Therapist and an Airfix kit fan
"Current" means electricity to a lay person, but a specific property of electricity to an 'expert'
"Window" has quite a few meanings; computer jock, builder, business person
Is this worth starting a new Topic? Can *I* do that? Not tonight though, well past my bedtime.
Glad I expended the effort it took me to join.

Welcome to AFF.
Yep, I think that it'd be worth it to start a new topic in the General forum.

It's a Great idea. A dictionary thread to explain all peculiar abbreviations. I've thought about it on and off for 2 months but I seem not able to organize myself enough to set sail so to say. I tried to joke about my initial confusion pertaining to NT; nobody seemed to notice. But hey! I've mistaken jokes on AFF to be serious so I guess I'm as good as the next.

If I see an abbreviation that I don't understand I type it into Wikipedia. That usually has answers.

What does 'my brain is on fire' mean?
Is there a way to search for the meanings to metaphores?
