I like the idea but even doing a weekly/bi-weekly/monthly magazine would be difficult I think. Plus wouldnt u have to get, oh wats the word? publishing rights? Im not sure on the word. I know nothing about how to go about it.. In my head it would make more sense to do an "online magazine" or something cos lets face it. I think the majority spend more time on the net & then they wouldnt have to go out to get the magazine from a bookstore/newsagency. I know if it was online Id check it out but I dont know if I could be bothered to go out to a shop & buy it.. If it was done online perhaps there could be a way to donate money (maybe using paypal or something) to help the magazine or support AFF (does it cost alot to run a website like this? Id imagine the bandwidth would run out fast). Sry that was so long
Oh lol just noticed there was already a paypal donation thingy here at AFF but ya.. I do think an Online mag might be the way to go if it was to actually happen
I like the idea of this a lot. I would happily contribute in some way. The online idea sounds more feasable although an actual magazine is much more pleasing to recieve, could be by post and subscription perhaps. Maybe start online and see how it goes.
I will be another writer for it.
I also think its probably best to have it not too regular turnover, otherwise it would go a bit stale, no? Especially online, if there's something with lots that's new every fortnight it wouldn't be so much of an appealing/compelling thing, any more than general forums with articles stories etc. Perhaps quarterly publication and make sure we make a good job of it?
How she twists and turns - Logical Parodox (Wittgenstein fan?) mentioned wanting to do a webcomic on another post. Maybe he can help with the know-how and eptness and you could do something together. Of course if one of you likes Manga and Marvell whilst the other likes Topffer and Robert Crumb you needn't produce the same comic, just kind of help each other out with it.
Thanks for getting the ball rollling, ichtms, this is a great idea i think.
I should have known better by the Beatles
is 'what i'm listening to at the moment', sorry, multiple windows. We don't have to name the journal that, or do we, oh no!
Have we definately decided against a material journal now?
If so, i think things like 7oclocks tea-movie should be included on the site and other short arthouse films. We could see collaborations then between digital film makers like 7oc and anybody who has a good idea. Pretty cool. 7oc has already intimated towards further projects. His/her fractals could be a featured series!

A print publication actually isn't as difficult as you think.
Also for publication for a magazine you just need an ISSN number, which is like an ISBN number for a book. Since a magazine is an ongoing (or they call it 'serial') publication it uses an ISSN number. They only cost a couple of dollars.
Then you do the layout... masthead (the box on the inside front cover that explains copyright and staff and issue contributors and contact info for the magazine), regular columns are in the front, feature article/articles in the middle and in the back you could have featured works like poetry and artwork. Embed the layout in PDF to send electronically to the printer. they can label/address and send them for you.
Ad space is sold according to size and placement in the magazine.
Marketing would actually be easy if you know how to do marketing/PR and you could get the word out about it without paying advertising fees.
This sort of thing is my specialty, so maybe it's easier for me to understand than others, but it's actually quite possible to start... for example, a quarterly magazine... with ad rates and subscription fees covering printing costs.

Would you be happy to take the initiative with that then, Amber? If so, and if others are happy with that, I think you sound like just the person to take the lead.
How many subscriptions would we need, and at what cost, to make it cost effective?
We could obviously have a website as well which would feature video, extas and information but a proper quarterly journal sounds dead exiting.
Look at iUniverse.com for on-demand publishing. They've done 4 of my books already and they come out well. The author has total control (no snooty outside editors unless you request one).
I can help with editing, etc. I teach college & high school English, am already published, and do our school's Literary Journal.

I use iUniverse as well, but the cost may be an issue. We could use Cafepress or LuLu.com, pay about $99 for full distribution instead of the $499 or higher from iUniverse. It would be available the same ways to the public.
I think starting it with a web site is best, and then seeing if there is enough interest to put the time and money into print editions. The important things to decide are...
- will there be a different theme per issue?
- do we assign different tasks or just have members submit their work?
- who will design and do the upkeep for the site? (I am willing to do this)
- are we assigning positions such as Editor for example to put in place for the entire project or will it be a per issue job?
I don't mind doing publicity/marketing work for it.
I haven't lost interest, just dealing with a killer tooth ache.
Amber
I'd like to help, I spend all my extra time on AFF anyway...
I'm fairly new here but ...
My husband and I can host the website for you free of charge to avoid the free spam-ad-sites. Hubby is a computer technician and we run an internet business so it's not a problem, it's what we do.
All you would have to worry about is the domain name.
If you need an Internet tech to help, he'd happily assist there too.
And I would be more than happy to write when I have the time, but that probably wouldn't be for at least a month, I have a lot on my plate right now.
Wow I havnt checked out this thread for ages & now there's all this talk. I would like to contribute something but I dont know what (if anything) I could add. I'm not good at Art (even though Id like to be) & Im not sure what else there is.
hmm a name... would it have to have 'auti' or 'aut' or something in it? I spose it would be useful hey.
i dont know why but I like 'Reflective Glass' lmao, sorta symbolic like oh how to say it, we can see them & they can see us but we cant really "see" each other, cos we have no clue as to why they act certain ways & they feel the same about us. We see them but the reflection is to bright soeverything gets lost & vice-versa..... Dont know if that made *any* sort of sense to anyone else...
Im not sure refletion is the right word, I know what I mean but Im not sure anyone else will lol.
