Edit buttons can be and are abused.
We might be AS, but are still human & all make silly or unpleasant mistakes, why can't an apology suffice, that is what we do when we speak.
The chances are that before a post is edited, the person to whom it was made had already viewed it.
I'm obviously a minority, but I can't see a problem in not having an edit button.

Maybe having an edit button would be too much like Orwell's 1984, the ability to revise written history, and would be too confusing and mentally challenging as far as keeping track of reality. 1984 would be scary, reality could be changed at will.
