This site, although the mother here is probably only trying to seek help, she doesn't seem to get that autism is not just a set of problems. She's sort of biased on the difficulties rather than the pleasures of her child. She's posting stories about Arvin (her son) pinching her, playing in the toilet, getting 3 hours of sleep, and even a time whe she fantasized filicide, just like all those other infamous mothers. It appears that she even wants Aspergers to be cured as well.
I think you are being too judgmental over the mother. We do not know her, and we certainly do not know what she is going thru as a mother. I've read her posts in the website (www.myautisticboy.com), and I really admire her for being transparent, and honest about her feelings. Yes she talks a lot about her difficulties, but she also talks about how her son, Arvin, makes her happy and fulfilled as a mother. Perhaps you think she is too vocal about her feelings, but I think she is just being un-hypocritical. Mothers like her should be admired and supported, not criticized unreasonably.
I'm not saying this is a negative site, I'm just saying it contains a few too many horrible things about autism. I voted "both" on the poll. Right now, Arvin is 18 years old. What is he up to right now? Has he made any improvements, or is he still behaving innapropriatey? I don't know if I'm right, but this site seems to be recalling a lot of his past. I'm still young, I don't know what it's like to be a parent of such kids, but I'm trying very hard to get prepared for it. It's good that this mother is offering some helpful hints and not just complaining like some mothers do. At least she's not like "My child never once told me that he loved me! Sad"
I need to edit the poll and maybe the post as well-- I overly exaggerated. The site is certainly not negative or misleading. All I wanted to do was point it out to this site. i need the stinkin' EDIT BUTTON!!
The site does seem quite negative.  For example, one of the questions being asked is "Is There a Cure for Aspergers Syndrome?" That sounds like something a curebie would ask.
I don't think she actually wants AS to be cured, she just wants to help individuals to live independently. But yes, that title makes her look like a curebie.

Is there anything wrong with wanting something to be cured? Don't you want a cure for cancer? or hiv? or bird flu? or down syndrome?

yes but 'we' believe autism and AS are on a differant level, than cancer, hiv and bird flu.'we' think this becuase we are probly born with AS or autism.

"I" am also probably born with AS and I think I would be happier if my AS could be cured. Smile

It's interesting that this site is from a lady in the Phillipines. She seems very honest about her feelings and certainly does a lot to help her boy. She has so much patience in sewing up holes in his gloves. I wouldn't be able to keep doing that for too long and I wouldn't have patience with a child screaming a lot (much as I wish I did).

She also said the medication for some of the side effects of autism is very expensive and out of the financial reach of most people she knows with autistic children.
I voted that the site is very negative, due to the curebie language it uses.
I don't think the mother's a bad person though, she seems very honest and everything, but she's doing what a lot of parents do and believing the mainstream media that autism is bad and should be cured.

(NB; pokwang, this thread is a about a specific site, if you would like to share your point of view about the concept of curing autism I think it would be best to either start a new thread or post in one that already exists on that topic, there are plenty)
I put both. All the information is true there and it's not being made as some sort of attempt to make autistic people look bad. But at the same time it dosn't really mention that they are benefits for autism and that it certin cases the prognosis for a normal adult life can be very high.

Yes, I do want a cure for cancer, which is a disease.

Yes, I do want a cure for HIV, which is a disease.

Yes, I do want a cure for bird flu, which is a disease.

But you cannot compare either of these three things with Asperger's Syndrome.  AS is life-long, does not kill people, and is not a disease at all.  So why fix something that isn't broken?
