Where can the petition be found?
me too.
Done.

Just waiting for the e-mail.
As Gareth already knows, I have signed this petition and I hope that it makes great impact. I very much doubt that it will however.

A couple of years ago I wrote to a number of people saying that people who have connections with autism or with Asperger Syndrome deserve better rights in society than normal people. Thankfully the issues I raised have been represented in this website as well as the dating website but I feel that a lot more needs to be done. The dating side of things are well represented here with the Aspie Friends website or whatever it's called. Every time I hear that dating services cost £1.20 a minute to use I feel like smashing my telephone to bits in disgust when this happens. I don't condone robbery, whether it is by telephone or otherwise.

You maybe intrested and surprised to know that I happen to be the author of the letter that was cut and paste half way down a page from this forum a couple of years ago and you can see it half way down the page here.

I was so annoyed and disgusted with the way that disabled people are treated that I either would write the letter and send it to people connected with Asperger Syndrome and autism, or bang my head severly against a brick wall. I did the former, fortunately and got just over a dozen replies, about a quarter of those I have sent out.  I believe that I have had contact with the person who relayed it onto the forum in the past.

I sent the replies to the National Autistic Society (wrote to Vernon Beauchamp, the Chief Executive as I thought that would make more impact) and guess what? Never heard from them since on the matter.

However I hope that Gareth's petition makes great impact.
Karbie: It only took seconds for me- have you checked your junk mail folder?

I do not agree here. Though it would be nice to have special privileges, we are seeking equal rights. Do not fall into the supremacy trap. Privileges should be granted based on merits of individuals, not their neurotype (regardless of whether someone's neurotype may make  them more likely to have skills in a particular area such as computing or other stereotypical AS interests).

We need 100 signatures to get an official response to this petiton, all we need is to get declared to have the same protections under law as other minority groups do. Once it becomes illegal to discriminate against someone based purely on autism/AS the same as it is to discriminate against someone based purely on skin colour, religion, gender or sexuality we will have won a large part of the battle. However, that day will never come if we alienate people seeking extra privileges.

People often mistake AFF's views as being elitist - please do not encourage this myth.

Gareth, I have not said anything about privileges. If it is a privilege, then its something that most people have that I haven't got. And I am certainly not encouraging any myth about the website as being elitist either. As a person who finds it diffcult with relationships and everyday things, I doubt that I can say that I am treated equally as most other people like that. For me, not having Asperger Syndrome is a privilege.

For years I have felt discriminated against at school, for example. I am afraid that you would have to spend the past 28 years from my point of view and you would see how things are like from my perspective and then you would more likely to agree with me.

Don't get me wrong - sending a petition to Downing Street is a great idea and I hope that a lot of impact will come out of it. My signature will represent 1% of your target, but if 99 other people will sign it, I do hope that the government will listen to us. I agree that we do need to be treated the same and a lot of work has to be done to make sure that it will happen.

Signed it.

why I even used my middle name :p I often use it for professional stuff.

if this'll make any difference, is another matter of course..i'm quite comfortable in my "hellish" second class citizen status.

I'm still waiting for an e-mail.
Signed it. Hope we get a response.
Is reaching the front page of the website in most signed at all feasible?
I would prefer it if you could sign the petition but not have your name appear on the website.

I recently signed an online petition and you could choose to omit your name ie you appeared as "name supplied" on the page. Also there was room to make a comment.

What happens if someone not from the UK signs the petition?  (Just curious.)

Well, if it was discovered and confirmed they could try and throw the petition out as invalidated, though it'd be a silly arguement is the other 99,999 signatures were from the UK, thats the way the laws work.

I'd wager they've got their ways to double check against census databases.

How about UK citizen expats? I know a few. (living in a tourist town and all.)

They already have an option for that, you can select ex-pat (And country), overseas armed forces etc.

I'm an ex-pat myself (Cornwall to Spain)

I have an uncommon last name so I used a different one... I hope I haven't accidentally invalidated the whole thing. Sad
