read this article what do you think?
Only briefly skimmed over it, but seems like it's in agreement with most of what we've been saying for the past 3 years or so.
What can I say? This format stinks...goodbye!
The article was interesting but I did not appreciate the word 'disease' being used.

Quote:
Most of the scientists who study the disease—though not all—believe that any increase in recent decades in autism incidence, as opposed to diagnosis, has been modest.

Keep in mind the article was written by someone who is a generalist... who probably doesn't have a degree in science; who writes about all sorts of medicine, from infections to Alzheimer's... His use of the term "disease" is likely naive, not malicious.

I did like this bit, at the very end:

"There's one more thing to be said for the cries of "epidemic"—they get the research money flowing."

Hmm... ya think?
It uses what I call Disorder Language (Calling Autism a disorder/disease, ans calling autistics traits symptoms), although I agree with some of its ideas.

I agree with that part of the article.  There's just no way that there can be an 'epidemic' without some obvious logical explanation.

I heard that a virus was supposed to be infecting babies and young children and causing autism. I wonder if anybody else has heard that one. Mum said she saw that idea in an article recently.
The sole reason why it appares that there is an autistic epidemic is because the disorder is becoming more easily diagnosed as we learn more about it. It has existed for centuries, but people just assumed they were wierd eccentric people and left them alone.
I think that is true. It's just that it has become more noticeable in recent times and there is less tolerance of people acting "differently" or "weirdly".
