One person's "useless" knowledge is another's useFUL knowledge. People who say things indicating otherwise are probably just jealous of your larger mental storage capacity.
Other people besides me studied how to fend off creatures of the night as kids? Cool. (I also know the plants that attract fairies, how to neutralize a voodoo doll, and Native rituals for cleansing places of negative influences. No, seriously.)
It's not so much the collection of knowledge as it is the ability to make connections among things that don't seem to be related. As a writer I've gotten some good story ideas from combining weird random bits of knowledge.
