Here's a quote from the piece- "Autistic spectrum disorders are estimated to affect approximately one in 100 people (more than 500,000 people in the UK)".
There are a huge number of us.

Doctors’ records already exist on the relatively small number of children who have been diagnosed with autism or autistic spectrum disorders. By going back through data collected on all the children, the researchers will also be looking for a number of traits including:
delay in learning to speak
poor communication skills
repetitive obsessional behaviour
limited empathy
Relatively 'small' number of children diagnosed? Is she living in the real world, in one state in the USA alone ASD's have increased 200% in the last five years. I think and I could be wrong, they're not looking so much at Asperger's and HFA/A-typical Autism but, the Kanner type. I've read the link three or four times and this is the impression I get from it.

Yes, those descriptions certainly don't match the usual profile of children with Asperger's or HFA or PDD Nos.
