Who on earth IS a good running canidate for president in '08?
Nobody. The philosophy I go on is to vote for who you hate the least.
What annoys me about politicians is that intelligence is no prerequisite for public office. Oh, they've got communication skills alright, but some of them have the intelligence of a table leg. (Thinking about a land zoning hearing I went to last year.) That intelligence level (or lack thereof) might explain how they're so easily taken in by the curebies.
My mother tried to get me help from them when I was having a lot of trouble with my lungs after I was born.
They basicly said they don't care about babies once they're born.
Sorry, who wouldn't help your family? the March of Dimes or Cure Autism Now?
March of Dimes.
I support Cure Autism Now because I am autistic.
Well guess what... I'm autistic too. And I don't support Cure Autism Now.
And supporting CAN means that people will work for me to solve this mystery.
There is no mystery. Autism is what it is. Just accept it for what it is.
I am high functioning.
Me too. And you know what -- I'm proud of who I am. So why would you support CAN?
And really believe that there is a cure out there--waiting to be unlocked.
There is no cure for being yourself. You are who you are, and nothing will change that. Even if you could change who you are, why would you want to?
President Bush's signing of that bill brings hope to all of us!
Speak for yourself. I don't want to be "cured". Not that there is any disease to be cured in the first place.
And supporting an organization such as CAN will help kids all over the world gain the skills they need to function in the world.
I have the skills I need to function in the world, without the help of organizations like CAN.
VICTORY VICTORY VICTORY VICTORY VICTORY VICTORY VICTORY

VICTORY VICTORY VICTORY
Holy crap.....! O.o;;;
No worries, he's gone now.
Ok, so maybe I can shead some light on this subject. I'm currently working on getting a play I wrote about how to become highly functionable with Autism and/or AS. I used to be a basketcase comming from a background of having nothing but a negitive input and enviroment in my youth. Worst cas scenario comes to mind. You name it it mostlikely hapened to me. Anyhoo this isn't a woe is me story. I had a bad case of the self-destructive mind and, over time, learnt to deal with- no drugs drugs made it worse- it and now am doing well. Any way the idea of saying difference of mind helps and understanding the differences and working with those help. Trying to clense the world of people like us would mess up the entire world. Lust look at the history of the great minds of our time, in the past 200 years, most were Autistic or had AS. The light bulb, Power, computer (thought Bill Gates is stil a tool), ummm, and ect. To say the there needs to be a cure is a grave, gave misunderstanding of this world.
People try so hard today to fit people into this box of normality that doesn't exists.
PPS. Does anyone out there know of any grants for artists with AS? I need funding t get this play out there (I'll make it a fundraiser for Aspies one I start making money) I want to contribute 25% of all my money I make to this org.
Funny; this whole thread is reminding me of the whole X-men premise. Dunno if anyone else is thinking of that. I have weird thoughts sometimes; and no, I don't wish to be cured of having them.
yes.

i understood the understory of x-men 3(i havent see it all).
I like to think of us as the mutants, with some other mutants wanting a cure, and us proud of who we are.

Last year it was suggested to me that I go to the commonwealth rehab service (CRS) that helps people recovering from disabilities find work, gain skills etc.
I stopped going after 2 sessions, mainly because I never really wanted to go their in the first place, but also because in the middle of the second session i realised how stupid the choice of the CRS was for me.
It struck me that I wasnt in rehab from anything.
And since AS is practically built into me, not only can I not be 'cured or 'reformatted', but its not something to be cured at all.
Cure autism? Thats like saying you want to cure blond people. People view autism as bad, because its a "genetic" disease. Therefore it must be evil. . . and people want to get rid of it. The politicians and sportspeople do what the people want. But they dont think to ask the people it affects. The only bad thing about aspergers for me is that I have trouble making socialising (making friends, getting a gf etc.) but because of aspergers, I am not really bothered by it. so I am happy, and I get to spend more money on myself rather then buying jewelry for my gf

Who made up this horse shit?
I can't honestly say that I'm 100% against the idea of a cure being developed, I myself probably wouldn't use it tho. What really pisses me off to no end however, is when abortion is promoted as a "cure". Saying "we want to help those who want help" is one thing, saying "Autistic people would be better off never being born" is entirely different.
A cure is an impossibility.
We talked on another thread about how a clinical dianoses of autism does not reflect the etiology, and that the real picture would be made up of hundreds, possibly thousands of different components that make everyones autism a bit different? Well - without a good working definition that fits a standard etiology then you cannot have a cure. QED.
Believing in cures is like believing in the tooth fairy.
I do not really give serious consideration to a cure, but I do think about the possible causes.
In the meantime, there are things that can be done to reduce the impact on an individual and improve our quality of life. Most of those do not require huge investment, but do require commitment and co-ordination. Rather than providing and offerring access to positive supports, the curebies seem to only be interested in raising money for their organisation (on the basis of fear or repugnance).
Well, the curbies are going to stay delusional about a cure, and the researchers are going to keep taking the money for thier research without bothering to enlighten the curbies that there's no way realistically that there can be cure, or even pre-natal screening.
Let them get on with it. We'll get a better diagnoses that fits an actual indivudal picture eventually, which should be useful for clinical services and provision on the care side.
In the meantime, we have to campaign for better services and forget the delusional curbies. They take up too much of our time and attention, and require seriously tinfoil to deal with them.
After slavery was abolished, some slaves were so brainwashed that they stayed on plantations voluntarily. I think this is a very similar issue.
