...It does really seem they might be blaming it only on AS, but it could be just innocently misworded.
Being AS can be really tough, as most of us here know.
The quality of being that way can cause problems in life, so the"ravaging of the mind" might be because she was stressed about too many things, because she was so different and couldn't cope.
Sadly, I know someone else that I think this happened to.
He is (or was....) someone that posted on a lot of different art sites and forums I go to. One day he just stopped posting anywhere. Later I find that he has a webspace, and had posted messages there that he "just can't take this" and had tried to kill himself with pills. Later he posted again that it hadn't worked.
But then, he just kinda fell off the face of the internet.....
So...Problems can come from being this way, because of feelings we get from others, or knowing that we're different and just not being able to deal with that.
The wording in that article might be poor, but it does have some merit.
The mental problems that can arise from having to live in the world we do, being this way, are real.
Some people can't cope.
It wasn't "because she was AS" that she killed herself, but being that way led to problems that she may not have felt she was capable of dealing with.
Saying she was AS might not even been done as an accusation to it, but just saying something about her for readers.

And just how did they figure this out? I read through the whole article (Correct me if I missed something) and no where does it state that she gave a message saying why she did.
Oh, wait! What's this? A spokeswoman for the family. Shoot! How could I forget? We can't speak for ourselves!
An event like this is solemn enough without some spokeswoman making theories on why it hapenned. In case you hadn't noticed, this makes me really mad.

I doubt Asperger's was the main reason for her suicide maybe she was manic depressive as well.

Yeah, it's like....."gently and peacefully"...like death is obviously the only alternative to it....

I think most suicides would take place in a mental state of agitation and turmoil.

Why don't they see that it was probably mostly depression and lack of fulfilment in life that led to her suicide.

It should have been made clear that the views were those of the family and not of the reporter himself.

It makes so much more arresting press to blame it on Aspergers than on the relatively more common condition of depression. Depression is actually a major health concern in modern society, resulting in countless suicides and much lost productivity and a great deal of unhappiness.
But it is so ubiquitous, it seems to have lost its newsworthiness and I think this is the real tragedy.

She didn't spend years battling Aspergers syndrome. She spent years battling the ignorance others had of her condition and how they limited her and squashed her ambitions.

darn - where's the edit option. I meant to say "seek" not seej

I tried to commit suicide last week by overdosing my medication.
It brought on a manic depressive state and everything got worse.
I don't think I should be telling you about this.

Waldo - I looked to see what your interests are - we share similar interests.
The thing about talking on a forum like this - is that you can feel safe - no-one can know who really are - you can state your thoughts (which can still feel difficult and make you feel vulnerable) but you are anonymous - so really it doesn't matter. Venting is great - can really help (I believe).
I sorry to hear you feel so miserable that you would think about and try suicide. Sixteen is not an easy age of someone with aspergers/autism. It's not an easy age of anyone - it's a time of change and transition - change is never easy. Do feel free to talk - there are people here who will listen and respond - I hope you can feel better soon.
Lucy.

And even if you don't start an avalanche, you've still helped one starfish?
Yeah, I know what you mean. After all, even one person is amazingly valuable... that should be enough reason to do whatever you have to do to avoid killing yourself.
Besides, if you do, the eugenics people have one less autistic in the world.
