Because they've only seen the posers.

The posers think that slapping on a pair of chain pants or something makes you a goth. No. Just because you LOOK like a Goth doesn't mean you are one. You can look average on the front, but hold the gothic attitude underneath. You are still a Goth. Without that attitude, you're just a person wearing chain pants.

Also, it is VERY important to note that Goths are NOT neccessarily depressed or suicidal, and they DO NOT slit their wrists. That's the Emos. Emo people are depressed, not us.

Yeah. Those guys who think they're tough simply because they wear scary clothing and black makeup with their hair in spikes who go around kicking people of lower social status: POSERS (Goths are of low social status themselves). Those slutty, pierced girls who wear nothing but straps all over their bodies and sit around in pubs: POSERS (Most goths aren't slutty and probably won't hang around with large groups of people anyway). Even those goths who hang around next to Hot Topic and giggle  andgossip about bands: POSERS (Goths don't huddle together in large groups and gossip about things, although real Goths may go to Hot Topic occasionally). Anyone who thinks that dressing up as a goth makes you one: POSER.

It's exactly as if you were to slip on a green tunic and a weird green hat and go off to get a wooden sword. You're still not Link.

Gothic people can choose whether they'd like to dress in gothic clothing or not. If chains appeal to them, fine. If chains don't appeal to them, fine. Doesn't change them.

Me? I wear Gothic clothing, but not every day. I have that Gothic pang to my personality, that morbid love for violence and macabre, and finding good in "evil". I'm actually not that connected to the Gothic community either, meaning I've never been to a live concert before, don't know TOO much about the culture, or moshed. There aren't many of us in New Britain, either, so it isn't like there some place other than Hot Topic we can meet. Not that many of us feel like meeting anyway.
