Another place for downloads is;

http://www.download.com

But there are so many out there and it's trial and error, then you stick with what you feel comfortable with :wink:

Here's another: http://telecharger.01net.com/

It's a French magazine site, but most of the downloads are available in English, and these guys seem to do a better job than most in trying them out, rating ease of downloading (etc) and generally keeping things up to date; and I note there's even a dedicated magazine "telecharger.com" which I'll look up later.

Any such site in English (more PC mags perhaps?) which you consider worth a look?
Things are under control at last, with just a few problems:

I now cannot load MW Works (French version, I need the dictionary...) so I've downloaded a spell checker, and will try out a free office suite (will report over the next few days). I'm still no nearer finding a working partition manager (and wondering if the IE deletion has rendered such permanently disabled?).

Also, tried Kaparsky anti virus, which didn't seem to be doing anything, but has also proved impossible to disinstall (can't be switched off it seems). This is the French language version, so will try to load the american version tommorrow, which may sort it (no chance tonight, the line's running like glue!).
Famous last words! After yet another virus blow out (necessitating a complete wipe of my hard disc, and double formating the new partitions; don't know which of my data backup files  can trust so I hope I won't need them) I've just about had enough of surfing with Windows!

Gareth has suggested Suse Linux (as have others) but I get the impression versions like Mandrake or Lindows may be easier for novices like me? Does anyone have recent experience of installing any of these, which would prompt you to recommend them?

If so, how about a link to the best download site (funds available are preciselly zero!)? I have two pristine bootable partitions ready and waiting...
ANTI VIRUS

AVG: http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
Avaast! (I use this): http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html

ANTI SPYWARE
==========
AdAware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
SpyBot S&D: http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-De...dl&tag=but
SpywareBlaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

I use all the above.

SOFTWARE FIREWALLS
===============
ZoneAlarm: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co...t_download
Kerio: http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html
Sygate: http://smb.sygate.com/download_buy.htm

I would also recommend Firefox browser http://www.getfirefox.com as it is a much more secure browser.
There is this article , which begins like this :

The first thought that goes through the mind of all right-thinking people when they get a broadband Internet connection is "How can I use all of this bandwidth, all day long?"

It's not exaclty what you might be after . I don't know , but there also the archive.org site , which has many goodies , like old  movies (the night of the living dead is one excellent movie ) and old tv series and computer stuff ( like the computer chronicles and other interesting things .

I hope you like these sites , and of course Linux is the biggest bundle of high-quality free stuff you can ever get . I for one have been using it for two months , and yes , it rocks and kicks windows *** . I tried redhat9 , and suse 9.1 , and lindows and knoppix and debian . Debian is rather difficult to install , and I couldn't install it . Lindows is useless , and not easy to use as they claim , and doesn't come with any software , only one cd . Within my limited experience , Suse is the best one I've tried , and it has lots and lots and lots of interesting programs , and is easy to install and very powerful and up-to-date .

It's internet traffic; this line is swamped with "TCP SYN flood" whatever that is (and it was causing 100% cpu usage, without me doing anything! No wonder the PC was getting so hot?) but it's now under control (now I've actually got rid of Internet Explorer; "deleting" it in the usual manner does nothing but hide the icons! Software from http://www.litepc.com/ does the trick) using a combination of Spy Bot (highly reccomended) Zone Alarm (ditto, both availble form davixen's link) and BlackIce Defender (which I got off a magazine CD ROM, but a google should find it).

Spy Bot is having trouble with some adware so I'm still looking for a total solution, and also a way of modifying my Win 98 partition (the "free" wares I've found so far only let one do a virtual exercise, or else only do something that XP does better) so if anyone has some suggestions, they'll be much appreciated!

I'll keep you posted on my own researches.
