why is it that aspies have it so bad? I mean we arent mental yet we are in a way. In other words we have our conditions yet we blend in with the others. I'm almost a little jealous of actual people with autism because people know that they are mentally ill and therefor leave them alone, while we are left out in the open and people assume that we are just wierd, stupid, rude, etc. I'm just so frusterated and kind of upset.
It's not necessarily that easy for Kannerians either.

Here's a Low Functioning Autistic person with a LOT to say on the subject.

It's still hard to figure out whether she's forced to live in an institution or if she lives in her own apartment, but she deals with a LOT of injustice and prejudice everyday from the people who work "with" her. Every night restraints are tie her to her bed because they think she might get up and wander off like a young child. Everyone overlooks the way she speaks and insists that she should speak the way a normal person would. One look at her and people will say that she's "retarded", or someone "trapped" in a body that looks "retarded".

You should see her Unperson speech, and her response to Autism Speaks articles.
Wow Bassman, I sure don't see it that way. I really enjoy being an Aspie. Granted, it often feels like being in a world of little kids that aren't capable of seeing things through logical eyes and that can be frustrating but the good news is that we CAN see it that way. We hear music more intensly, see colors more vividly, feel sensations no one else can appreciate and we actually take the time to taste our food! Just because the rest of the world is not up to our standards doesn't mean our lives have to suck - on the contrair. I suppose it is a matter of perspective and as Aspies we have the opportunity to appreciate many of the world's offerings in a way that few can. I cherish this uniqueness. My glass is more than half full...
Hey, we don't have a monopoly on alienation. There's a reason it's, oh, the most common theme in books, plays, poetry, songs, movies, and TV shows. Everyone has a cross to bear, this is ours.
The same reason that all minoritys are discriminated against, we are convienient scapegoats.

Which means I am ****ed being a black, aspie, jew...
No no no no no

Why do you feel so persecuted, if what I believe is true i'll just say to people I have AS and this is why I am how I am, big deal.

It ain't gonna kill me, i'm not a threat to myself or others around me. Get some sense of rationality here please.
Rationality is against human nature...
What is it that you are a scapegoat for then?
People feeling awkward in a social situation?

Bassman, I understand it if you feel upset by someone's actions in the past. Most societies treat any inability as stupidity or helplessness. I have met a few too many Aspies that have had trouble in the work place because people think like that. I have heard alot of stories about parents being abusive or not understanding.

The concept that made it hard for them was bung like "lack of social skill=stupid". Alot of abuse has been done to various people because of that primative concept.  I can also agree with the idea that far too many people think that any lack of social skill means a person is dumb or within the retardation spectrum.

I personaly think that anyone pointing their finger and shouting out "retard" doesn't know a dam thing, and likely won't listen to the truth either. Obviously retarded people are persicuted in many levels of english, for one.
Okay I guess that that was a crappy way of putting it, I wasn't thinking when I posted that. That is kind of the one size fits all reason of discrimination against minorities. I should have said that its because to them we seem sub-human, especially low functioning autistics.

Well, I didn't mean to say that I thought everyone gets it, because not everyone does. I just think it varies. 'Lack of speach=dumb', though, seems to be a common concept that causes it in most cases. I don't know much else, about it.
