THIS IS BAD.
Sorry about the really big text. I'm not used to myBB. In phpBB it would appear a lot smaller.
Organize and develope what ever talents the Autistic Goddess has given you.  Don't know what those talents are, look for what you like.

Think about all the suspected Aspies who have excelled in this world and inproved/changed it.  Would the NT's want to go back in time and 'cure' them?

I'm afraid that the truth is that those of us who have been blessed by the Autistic Goddess are sentenced to a war of pacifistic guerillia warfare.  Always slipping out of the shadows to launch attacks of benovelent genius.
Well, if the government is as inefficient as it has been in the past (it is, after all, a huge group of ultra-NTs), then we have nothing to worry about.

When reading the above, note that I am attempting to be optimistic.
They got round to bombing Iraq, didn't they?

Blowing up the White House is a bit of overkill.
Oh my God...

What does the "screening at two years" bit mean, in practice? If early diagnosis means a child can get access to the things they need to help them (e.g. specialist schooling), rather than having to struggle on not even knowing why they're struggling, I'm all for it. But "screening"? So they're only looking for it so they can stamp it out... if that's the case, what are parents supposed to do? Alright, so I'm far too young to know about being a parent, but I imagine if I had a child on the spectrum I'd want them to be able to get the special provision etc (I've seen what mainstream school can do to aspies), for which they'd need a diagnosis, but if diagnosis was going to lead to a bunch of idiots attempting to "cure" the child... that would be a hard choice. Essentially, both outcomes are bad.

We don't just sit around saying how bad it is, We need to take some action.

Sorry Shy

I don't have any knowledge of how American legislation works and i have no idea, how i can help.

i don't think the point is whether or not they can force a cure on everyone or whether they will be succesful in their pursuits or not. i think the point is that they are creating this "war" against a group of people simply for being who they are born to be. i think the point is that even though they can't "cure" everyone they are going to be causing suffering to a lot of children. children who may or may not be on the spectrum, but are considered a "risk" because of their b.s. screening tests.  and lastly, i think the point is that this could escalate to further assults against the autistic community.

it's not offical yet.  the president still has to sign the bill before it passes.  i'm kinda hoping he says no, but with all the racial intolerance against autistics favored in the media today, he won't and we will be offically declared bad for socitey (at least here in the us).

to say that autistic children are just diffcuitles and burdens is wrong and just trivalizies us to nothing...

Yep, and we know he's Conservative. Let's still hope he vetoes the bill. >_<

well this is certainly a one-sided legislation and the article makes it seem like it's the right thing to do and nearly every autistic supports it but that's not the case at all.  this is the wrong approach and is loaded with the wrong language.  you don't declare a war on autism.  you don't try to cure it.  you try to accept diversity.  you try very hard.  $1 billion could get every aspie employment assistance by helping the workplaces accomodate them/be educated about them THE REAL ASPERGER'S, not as if it's some **** problem.  What a negative law.  it's very insulting.  it just gives stupid people confirmation of their incorrect goals for curing autism.  this is a bad thing indeed.  yes we should understand the brain but not with the attitude of destroying these different people (like me).  the government basically is saying we suck and they hate us all.
After hearing about this act, my heart has been aching ever since!

Im a proud parent of a 6 year old autistic boy.He is not very verbal (and there's nothing wrong with that), but I know that he is very happy with the way he is(how he was born to be) and I encourage him to stay that way and always will.A fellow parent brought this act to my intention and said "Isn't this great news?!"
I say NO! It's terrible news! AND My son's mind is HIS mind, not the government's and I will never allow his mind to be 'toyed with' against his will.
It depresses me how anything remotely 'different' in a person is given a 'not normal' label. Is imperfection really that bad?  Show me someone who is perfect! I've yet to met anyone who is:/
Imperfection or differences is what makes an individual and individual and should be encouraged and embraced!
Just let me know the course action this group will take to protest this act. I will be more than happy to support it! 100% Wink

opps! I meant attention not intention:/  Sorry about thatWink heh!

Let's not forget that these are the same people who have brought us the "War on Drugs", the "War on terrorism", etc.  I'm not equating autism with drugs or terrorism. I'm just pointing out that the 'war' is being waged by people who have no idea what they are doing or what they are dealing with.  They also have no track record of success.

Despite this, the concern being voiced in this thread is valid. By choosing the rhetoric of "war", they are forcing the project into a binary choice where victory can only be achieved by the defeat of autism.  That kind of mindset is scary.  What we need to get accross to our congressional representatives is that we should be supporting an "understanding autism" initiative.  We welcome the funding. Perhaps it can be spent to help us better allow people on the spectrum to maximize their levels of self-actualization, and to have their participation in society match their gifts and desires to do so.

If we approach our representatives in such a way, they will be much more amenable to listening to our point of view that if we label them as being bent on genocide. Remember, doors can be closed just as easily as they can be opened.

I would encourage a letter writing campaign by people on the spectrum making some of the above points. Most of our representatives have only heard from curebees.  It would be constructive if Aspies could let the people holding the pursestrings know how the Aspie community would appreciate having the money distributed.
War has been declared on us. Lovely. </sarcasim>

Maybe the Civil Rights legislation of the 50s and 60s should have been about "curing" nonwhites.

Would have thought that Michael Jackson's been working for towards that for years. Tongue
