This is a waste of a billion dollars (much like the unnecessary wars). The money would be much better spent curing diseases which kill people.
The thing I find confusing about this is, why is the federal government spending so much money on "fighting autism" instead of teaching children coping skills so they can grow up to become productive adults. I think they are forgetting that autistic children grow up and eventually lead their own lives... what are they planning to do with the generations that can't been "cured"?
My son is in a self-contained Autism classroom at school (which I agree is the "least restrictive environment" until he learns coping skills). The school district cannot afford to hire a qualified teacher to teach his class. Not only his class but the entire district, except for two really great schools, have poorly staffed Autistic programs where the children are "housed" instead of taught. The district blames the problems with staffing on low funds and inability to pay "highly qualified" teachers. So, my son is losing out on years of learning while the government spends money trying to find a way to "fix him"... which, I think we all agree, is a waste of time and money.
If the US Government (I can't speak for other countries) would worry more about improving the future of autistic children and less about curing them, I think there would be no issue with being autistic and no reason to seek a cure... how do we get this message to congress and lawmakers though? We'd have to speak louder than the more popular organizations like CAN, DAN, Autism Speaks and other "curebies" to have our voices heard... good luck with that.
OMG!! This is really horrible.
I am just speechless

We don't just sit around saying how bad it is, We need to take some action.
The only result of all this money being spent to combat autism will be a scientifically precise method of identifying us at an early age through genetics or some other way. Whether or not this is a good or bad thing I don't know. There will be no more people like me who grew without a clue of their own autism. It would mean none of us will escape having the label attached from childhood. This could make it easier for NT society to segregate and further discriminate against us. They sure as hell won't find a cure.
why aren't any more posts viewable in the thread? Are they being censored?
Ignore my post, I can see the others now.
...and so the age of the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder epedimic begins.
MORE ACTION
(I fear too late, but better late action than no action...)
Combating the Combating Autism Act:
http://rettdevil.blogspot.com/2006/07/co...m-act.html
The Combating Autism Act is opposed by many in the autism rights movement, some of who view its provisions aimed at eliminating autism as one more step toward genocide or eugenics directed at autistic people. Such advocates believe that autism should be accommodated, not combated. A declaration of war upon autism is considered a declaration of war upon autistics.

British medical researchers recently announced plans to use cutting-edge science to eliminate a condition my family is familiar with: autism. Actually, they are not “curing” autism or even making life better for autistic people. Their plan is to eliminate autism by eliminating autistic people. (...)
Despite all the rhetoric about “alleviating suffering,” the bottom line in targeting the disabled in utero is the bottom line. As Business Week puts it, “the social cost of accommodating [their] birth is increasingly being seen as exceeding [their] worth.”

Ah, But can a bunch of quacks really force a cure on every aspie in the world? Think about it. They sure aren't curing me.
i don't think the point is whether or not they can force a cure on everyone or whether they will be succesful in their pursuits or not. i think the point is that they are creating this "war" against a group of people simply for being who they are born to be. i think the point is that even though they can't "cure" everyone they are going to be causing suffering to a lot of children. children who may or may not be on the spectrum, but are considered a "risk" because of their b.s. screening tests. and lastly, i think the point is that this could escalate to further assults against the autistic community.
Ah, That's true. Stupid screening tests >>
What if the screening test were not b.s. and completely accurate? I really think this will be the result of this war. The question is, will these children being labeled autistic suffer for it?
I doubt any test could be completely accurate and anyway, what about all the undiagnosed adults around, many of whom have already had children?
I think an accurate test could be developed through intensive study and research of us aspies and the way we behave or through genetic testing. I'm thinking this will be the result of all the money that's going to be spent.
THe undiagnosed adults will still be just that but their children may be branded as autistic from an early age if this screening becomes common place. I'm still trying to decide if this is good or bad. If the screening is used to segregate and discriminate against these children then it's bad. If it's used to get services and support for kids that need it, then it's good.
Why doesn't this surprise me?
Maybe the Civil Rights legislation of the 50s and 60s should have been about "curing" nonwhites.
Forced ECT or lobotomies, anyone?
How about a bill going toward something that would raise awareness and improve understanding?
