did you know newpapers are 8th grade reading level. so why do the highschools make engish lit mandarory.
Yes it is. At least where I live. All you need is to learn how to memorize data to get good grades. You don't even have to do homework because someone can let you copy from his/hers. And it doesn't matter what you learn or if you already know what they're talking about, my English teacher put me a 95 even if I'm the only one in the class who can decently speak English.

Plus, we haven't learned anything new in Math because my classmates don't understandand (apparently they don't understand anything), and I'd preffer not to take Orthography, it seems like a waste of time since I already know how to spell all the words I have to repeat in that stupid book.
my specialist subjects are Science and Modern Enginering, im hoping to build a car company called Ankarion and writ a huge series of books and develop weapons and nukes and stuff, but i still think certain subjects are pointless and homework is a load of balls lol
r thworkplace, not our homes!Tongue
sorry, my keyboard f***ed up!
Northview Middle School, Indianapolis, part of the Washington Township Metropolitan district.  Remember that name, it's a pit.  They decided that my eldest son "had discipline issues" and THAT WAS IT!  I paid money to get him formally diagnosed, and he has severe ADD and Asperger's.

DO NOT TRUST SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS!  They work FOR THE SCHOOL!  They are paid to serve the budget interests of the school.  They are not paid to care about children.
I know what you mean. In school (and in life in general) I was always singled out as having "poor social skills", "obsessions", and "fine motor delays". Everybody said I was "seeking negative attention" (by doing things like stimming, interrupting, talking at innapropriate times, etc.) but I wasn't!!! I also used to get pulled out of class to work on my handwriting, which was incredibly humilliating.

Then I find out, at the age of 15, that I probably have Asperger's. Why did nobody figure that out? I had a lot of the symptoms, but I guess it was easier for them to say I was "bad", "disruptive", "attention seeking", you name it.
My second grade teacher would tie hyperactive kids to tables.

Every time i hear it i cringe, i always wonder how someone's parent is going to be competent enough in all the different subjects that are usually taught.

It's not a matter of being "competent enough", it's a matter of being less incompetent than the government-hired teachers.  In general, homeschooled children do better on standardized tests than do government-educated children in the USA.  Likewise, homeschoolers are not a group of isolates who communicate with nobody.  There are large networks of homeschoolers here.

My experiences with teachers and such have been almost completely positive, they have almost all of them almost always tried to help me to the best of their abilities

Lucky you.  In the USA, government-run schools are often the worst possible schools in an area.

That does not reflect positively on the government, at all. Why is this so?

Count the number of Americans (over 250 million at last guess).  Divide by the number of nationally elected officials (536).  Our government simply is not representative of the people.  Instead, control swings between a small handful of self-interested and ideological interest groups.  None of them, NONE OF THEM care about the people, including the ones that hoot the loudest about how much they care about the people.

This distance--this imperial--model of government becomes the prototype for all levels of government in the USA, including state and local.  Even though schools are controlled by local governments, they model their practices on state government, which models its practices on federal government.  Thus, it does not govern, it rules.  We have been so conditioned by our imperial federal government that the majority of people are resigned to roll over and accept this state of affairs.  Anyone who demands local government be responsive to local needs ends up excluded from the process.

Likewise, local government is quite corrupt.  In any city or county, there are usually two big factions.  These two factions only care about who gets to run the game, not what any results are.

Thus, in Indianapolis, for example, we have a Democrat mayor who is obsessed with getting loans to use to pay for gigantic construction contracts (like a new stadium) while our streets decay and less than 1/3 of children qualify to graduate from high school.  We have also had two record years for violent crime and murder, all the while, our mayor is obsessed with imposing bans on tobacco smoking and changing street names.  He is supported in his endeavor by a Democrat-dominated city council.

And what about the Republicans?  They'd be different.  They'd all have "R" after their names in news reports instead of "D".  Okay, they wouldn't be different except for that.

Why don't the people rebel?  Because the two big factions have the majority of people quite hornswaggled.  The Republicans cultivate the "donut" dwellers (peripheral residents), warning them of dire results of letting a single cent be spent on public projects and playing on latent and not-so-latent racism.  The Republicans cultivate the center dwellers, warning them of dire results of not passing smoking bans--and also playing on latent and not-so-latent racism (yes, black/white racism does go both ways) and on white guilt.  A group of randomly-selected residents from all over the county could probably do a much better job of running things.

Some examples of how things work here:

A government-owned building (The Julia Carson Federal Building) now pays host to a tavern.  This tavern is owned by the current president of the Common Council.  He is a Democrat.  Julia Carson is a Democrat in Congress.  The building is administered by the Trustee of Central Township (a Democrat).  A city park was demolished to provide parking for this tavern.  This tavern was built WITHOUT building permits--they were retroactively granted.  There was no liquor license application.  It was granted, anyway.  I'm not picking on Democrats, just explaining how things work here--patronage, party, corruption.  All the players in this case happened to be Democrats.

Our mayor has FOURTEEN deputy mayors, none of whom are elected.  But they and their staffs all have to be paid for.

We recently had several police agencies consolidate.  The result was FEWER police on the street.

And to keep it all going, "Democrat" and "Republican" are treated as inborn religions.  Anyone who tries to work outside the Democrat/Republican structure becomes branded a "traitor" or otherwise cast out of the political process.

Okay, This is mainly for people that live in the USA. Have you noticed how screwed the school system is. ((See http://www.aspiesforfreedom.com/showthread.php?tid=5012 for example)). I have noticed that the teachers don't give enough detailed instruction. I'm home schooled now. But when I was in school I wasn't given the help I needed. I was doing horrible at Math and Social Studies, Simply because they wouldn't give me the help I needed to do the work. They also treat aspies like any other kid, I don't mean this in a good way, I mean it in a bad way. If we get upset from a loud noise or something and scream, We're punished because we misbehaved? Why can't the board of education just learn to understand us? Asperger's Syndrome is Not going to go away, The school system cant just ignore us like we're scum. And I've also noticed that if you don't comply with writing standards ect they can hold you back ((They did so to my nephu)) That's the most sick and disgusting thing I heard. They held my nephu back because He dosen't have good motor skills. My sister's possibly sueing them because of that. Have you had any bad experinences with the school system? Well share it here.

i know exactly what your saying. im a 15 yr old female from plymouth who has been let down really badly by the school system. my teachers predicted that i would fail maths, but this is not my fault because im not intitled to a learning assistant because im not offically diagnosed with AS. although my mum has been seeking a diagnosis since i was 2 years old! so now at last i am home schooled and since being at home my maths grade has gone from a D grade to a B grade! Smile

Here in Norway are quite happy with our socialdemocracy

Imagine the effects government centralization and interference when the government has only one elected official per 600,000 people (approximately).

the ideal is that everyone should get the same opportunities.

Imagine a society where anyone interested in social programs doesn't care about opportunities.  Instead, they demand equal OUTCOMES.

Quote:
That's a heritage which we preserved from the second world war where things were dramatic, but it seems impossible to start anything similar in the US.

I'm of the opinion that the United States of America (centralized democratic republic) would best be served by becoming the United States of America (federation of independent democratic republics).  The national government should be severely curtailed and state governments given prominence.  Yes, it would allow for greater injustice in individual states, but it would provide for greater justice over the entirety of the country.  As it is now, the USA is an empire that is too big to remain true to any worthwhile ideal.

We should split up into 51 countries (Puerto Rico would gain equal standing as one of the independent states), ensure appropriate economic (no tariffs or travel restrictions among states) and military cooperative measures (a multi-state force replacing the federal military).

Would America lose power?  Yup.
Is power always virtuous?  Of course not.  Eventually, power becomes the master of whomsoever would wield it.  The greatest mistake the USA made at the end of the Cold War was attempting to impose hegemony.  I say this as a dyed-in-the-wool old-fashioned conservative.  What we needed to do was back away from the world, back away from the meddling, and let the business of America be America.  If some unwashed savages somewhere else wanted to wipe each other out, it was and is not our business if they did so until and unless they attacked us, at which point it would become our business to eradicate them and then GO BACK HOME.

I believe that the education system is in real trouble.  Standards have declined precipitously.  Students today do not know what we knew twenty years ago.  The decline is so marked that High School students seem to have difficulty naming the planets in order.  Forget about whether Pluto is a planet or not.  I am speaking of the planets generally.

What is the solution?  I feel that it is time to abolish teacher credentialing programs as they now exist.  Replace them with programs that emphasize content over nonsense.  In other words, science teachers should know how to teach *science*, not merely know how to teach methods.  Teacher colleges are diploma mills, institutions that have incorporated the worst of workplace politics and mixed them with schoolhouse politics.  They are pathetic.  And, they are not giving the teachers what they need to succeed.

The system is failing.  Students should be upset.  So should the rest of society.  Solutions must be drastic because the system is failing, and whole institutions are built on its failure.  Teacher colleges are one such institution.  No Child Left Behind is another scam that is really about getting student information in the hands of military recruiters.  And, finally, various social agendas that are disruptive to society have gotten in to schools, and made them laboratories for decadence rather than places of learning.

All the best.
"In other words, science teachers should know how to teach *science*, not merely know how to teach methods."

ATM: Let me rephrase that with apologies.  I meant to say that science teachers should be knowledgeable about their subjects, not merely the methods of teaching.

All the best.
I HATE No Child Left Behind. They fired my GENIUS Advanced English teacher because she failed the MATH section of the teacher test. Then they hired some nitwit who has no idea what she's doing and makes us read extra Romeo and Juliet. I HATE THAT PLAY!! (And I can understand the language and plot. I loved Othello. I just hate the storyline of Romeo and Juliet. It's so LAME!!)
