My sixth form college was seriously screwed up. It had only been open for a year when I got there and it closed down three years later when I left. There were two campuses in different towns and about 10 teachers in our campus and most left to go to the other one after a lesson. The teachers had to teach up to 5 different subjects and there was no cover if one was ill or stuck in traffic (the bridge between the two towns is always heavily conjested)
Some teachers only taught you if the principal was walking by otherwise they would talk about their car with students who didn't want to learn. The principal battered a teacher then mysteriously disappeared, so nobody ran the college. Teacher had too much material to cover and not enough time to do it and so would leave out whole sections and we weren't even told we had coursework to save the teacher time yet on wednesdays I had to come in for 10 mins to get a regester done and that was it.
I'd hate to be saying this about the school system because these forums are not really made for bombing a person or a group of people: I agree with this topic, the school system is made up. In the U.S. the least action they have for people with disabilities or disorders is the IDEA act (Individuals with Disorders Education Act). All it does is place that person in a room to watch movies and play around (while on the off-chance of learning) and call them the Special students or the kids in Special Ed. Ech, it makes me upset!
what a bad idea act! LOL! I agree school system is screwed. In Chicago, public school teacher are union and they demand more money when a the highest grade that can ever read is a 3rd grader? Bunches of junk.
I get annoyed when they punish me for defending myself.
Apparently, fingernails are just as bad as guns.

Apparently, your school system may not realize that self-defense, in school or not, is covered by the law so it's perfectly legal. If your school has something against it, they can take it up with the federal government.

You know they really are a *** when come to challenging these issues. There are school bullies that rule the school like anarchy. If you come to your new school and you see graffitti on the wall, tec. You are stepping in a battleground. Oh nevermind the metal detector, they used fist and verbal abuse. Anything outside the metal detector is fair game and the school's hand is washed clean.
Teacher on the other hand, are money hungry and not all of them cares as long as their billfold is stuff. Majority of teacher that "doesn't care" are those on union. They must realized that school teacher make lesser money than programmer. What is the odd of them trying to beef up the salary? You got failing and mislead students in the education system. Every teacher who on union in Chicago chipped in 10 cents each or more for politician who want to raise more money for education. What does beefing up money has to do with education? Ok. It depend. Resources and material. Not more money for teacher. That not a good motivation if the teacher holding a book in his hand and drawing things on the board when some students who having trouble are left in the dark. Ok. I know what you were thinking. Can the student raises their hand for help on the homework? The answer among you and your experiences in the education system. The fact is that we can't feed union and non-union teacher. We might hold a minumum qoute that the teacher better get the class on the roll or his payroll account will get wipes. That a big motivation right there!

You're this topic's hero, I agree with that, Schools break more laws than just that >.> But trust me, You dont want this wolfeh on a rant today
Is it full moon yet?
just kidding!
And my IEP sucks. Seriously, it does. I don't give a damn if I sometimes walk on my toes and don't give eye contact.
I often walk on my toes, because i feel comfortable that way. My mom has always been bitching to me that I should be walking flat feet at all times, or else i will have back problems. wtf? I don't have any back problems--though my mom is a doctor, i think that the "back problems" thing is nonsense. I'm sure she was just trying to persuade me to stop, because it made me look ***. and I don't #$%@ care!!!! Why do NTs make such a big deal about petty little stims like hand flapping, rocking, toe-walking, everything???
Hey, many of the things you Northern Americans wrote are very very similar to what happens in my country (which has nothing to do with the USA). I mean i can just copy many parts of your posts and use them to criticize MY country's government.
I think it is unfair to blame the teachers. They are simply working for their salaries. What do you expect them to do? Revolt?! Rebel?!
I am convinced that the SYSTEM has to be changed RADICALLY.
We should examine if pupils really need to go to school at all - hey, don't get me wrong! Up to a few decades ago it was only a small (up-scale) sector of society who received formal education. The big majority of kids would play and work (i'm not suggesting child-labour, mind you!). For centuries, humans lived a much better life than we are doing, even though their levels of education was much less.
My point is that the educational system is overloaded. And there is NO
GAIN in it. Anyone whose IQ is less than 130 would never make it to a rocket-technology lab ... if you can get what i mean ... so why the hell are teachers making everyone study a gazillion of (useless) things ?
Why are we forcing kids to sit for complicated (not complex!) examinations?
Why are we making it so hard for them?
And why don't we tell them the truth: "There is no special destiny for you, my son! You will have to strive and struggle just as your ancestors used to do."
Thomas Edison had received no special schooling and Socrates did not attend any academy (the concept of "academy" was eventually invented by one of his students!). Yet their genius revolutionized the world.
In contrast, we were made to study loads of things like crazy ... and what did we achieve? We're here on this forum grumbling like crazy! ! ! ! ! !
Darmani, are you sure you're an Aspie? Your way of thinking is NT to the full !
You justified the educational system by saying that had there been no schools i wouldn't even have been able to WRITE DOWN my GRUMBLING ! ! ! For me this is pure-NT reasoning.
Because universities here were used as glorified baby-sitting institutions and kids were pushed into academic courses even when they were more practically minded, we now have a severe shortage of tradespeople.
GOOD POINT !
Child labour was making children work nonstop, often with little food in dangerous conditions. No. I mean something more like working an hour after school at a cheap fast food restaurant, and get 5 bucks as they leave.
Agreed !
but i still think certain subjects are pointless and homework is a load of balls lol
I can agree on the subjects thing. But there are actually some subjects out there that a must for teenagers to take in school, such as Drivers Education. Now with homework (another part of school that I hate), it seems like teachers just can't give enough? I'm loaded down with pages of homework every day, and it's tiring. Plus, I'm going to have to get a job soon, so that + homework = really bad in school.
Then I find out, at the age of 15, that I probably have Asperger's. Why did nobody figure that out? I had a lot of the symptoms, but I guess it was easier for them to say I was "bad", "disruptive", "attention seeking", you name it.
That's what everyone says about me, even though I'm officially diagnosed.
I am lucky in that I got to go to a charter school that has really good teachers, students who accept people different from them (at a much higher rate than most schools I've seen or heard of), and I just finished a really great writing program where professional authors taught me.
However, my two sisters went to public schools, and I was in them before high school. Even though I had really good teachers (we live in what's mostly a very wealthy city, where we were an exception to this), the bullying was what ruined school for me, though it certainly wasn't perfect.
I had a lot of needs that went unrecognized for quite long, and some of which aren't getting addressed until right about now when I graduate in less than a week.
Special services has been the most difficult to deal with. I've contacted them in the last two years about some of these difficulties I've had, but they seem to believe that by knowing my diagnosis and just looking at me that they must know just what I can and cannot do.
They're with good intentions, but almost half of them are completely clueless, and my teenage friends and the teachers are much more likely to understand how to sensibly interact with me than the people who specialize in special educaton.
I think that some of the staff are frustrated because some of my needs are significant, which they probably don't expect since you need to maintain a C average to stay in this school.
Also there are things like advanced math and physics that I can do with ease that go way over their heads, and unfortunately some people are not used to the idea that someone can be really good at somethings and really bad at some others. The school psychologist is apparently accustomed to this thinking as well, as during testing I was having difficulty doing arithmetic problems (which while some was just because I have trouble with arithmetic, also they didn't have the problems written down, they just said them, and I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do anyway).
