she asked my brother if he had any questions so he asked her straight "am i an aspie or what"she replied by saying "your not wierd enough"!!
Those were the exact words of the psychiatrist I went to! She told me "I am not claiming you are normal. You are indeed on the autistic spectrum, but you are not weird enough to be diagnosed with Asperger's"
wtf part of the autistic spectrum is one supposed to be on if "not weird enough" for aspergers?!
some dx aspies on here are way less weird than I am, and than your brother is, boxergirl.
definitely, if he needs it for services, get a second opinion from someone who has a clue.
It's kind of how I felt in high school. The sort of, "Oh well you don't seem all that weird/troubled, you can't be Aspie" Tell your brother to go back to that psychologist dressed up fully as a Goth, then tell him to ask them "Am I weird enough now?"
P.S.: He could dress up as a clown too. It's just that I have a personal thing for Goth boys, is why I suggested him dressing Goth. LoL.
What the? I can't believe your pshcyologist!!!
Will it help you that I got a diagonosis TWICE and I look more normal then anyone I know!!!!
I am also a musician and don't even look artistic whatever that look is supposed to be.
That is called STERO TYPING!!! Go to another phscyologist who can diagnose your brother if you live in the States and live in Arizona I can give the name of two good pshcyologist that can help you!!!
Good Luck and find another pshycologist!
Boxergirl,
The main thing is your brother having difficulties in life? If he is then he should seek a diagnosis.
I really feel for anyone who gets shunned by a stupid Shrink who does the sterotype thing.
In all reality everyone is different and while there probably are some eccentrics in the autistic spectrum there are also the aspies who are not eccentrics and are more introverts.
Heck, I am sure some of us can tell you that we were first diganosed with a stupid shyness disorder.
I was diganosed with AS and didn't know what it was until I did research and I did fit the diagnosis.
I have three types of learning disabilities as well so I am kind of a "mutt" so to speak
Go to another phsycologist who will respect your brother and give them the proper diagnosis!!!
Hope you find the appropriate help!!!
hi,weve just returned home from the doctors and quite positive, saw a different gp who said as soon as he gets report back from pschciatrists(sp)he will then be able to make a decision as to what our next step is,he said if she says that he has aspergers but doesnt want to give him a label, then he can make diagnosis of aspergers, but if she only says aspie/autistic traits then he would be willing to help us seek a 2nd opinion.
i hope im not being too optomistic?
the only reason i want him to get a diagnosis is that he will be living on his own soon, and i know he will be okay, its just with small things like his bills, cleaning, shopping etc that he may need help with, and maybe the occasional prompts to have a shower, lol
this may sound morbid but if something happens to me i do worry what will happen to him,he is also quite vulnerable and isnt that good of his chioce of friends,or to put it bluntly he isnt a good a judge of character when it comes to people taking the mick out of him.
maybe some kind of outreach would be perfect for him,but in order to access that a diagnosis is needed.
boxergirl,
You sound like a wonderful sibbling!! I commend you on wanting help for your brother.
I hope he gets the proper diagnosis!! What I can't understand is this:
gp who said as soon as he gets report back from pschciatrists(sp)he will then be able to make a decision as to what our next step is,he said if she says that he has aspergers but doesnt want to give him a label, then he can make diagnosis of aspergers, but if she only says aspie/autistic traits then he would be willing to help us seek a 2nd opinion.
i hope im not being too optomistic?
So what he is saying is if the shrink says he has AS but doesn't think he is wierd enough then your GP can make the diagnosis himself. Okay, fine, but how condtracting to say, but if he just shows aspie/autistic traits then he has to get a second opinion. OMG, if your brother is showing signs of aspie/autistic traits then he has Aspergers Syndrome.
I understand that if it is just the traits your brother is showing then you are going to have to seek a 2nd opionion through another pshcyologist, but still why is it so hard.
I am so thankful that I was diagnosed right off the bat!! Ya know I don't even think I show aspie traits on the outside. Though I have extreme problems with my emotions.
And my phsycologist listened to what I said and based on his observation (not on whether I looked wierd) but based on what I told him with not clicking or making friends, never having romatic relationships and being extremely obessed with microphones and music as a young child and other things he gave me the diagnosis.
I had didn't have to act wierd or show any outside traits. He also told me that every apsie he has ever met are different. The diversity is WIDE!!!
I pray that your brother gets proper help!!!! Good Luck and keep us posted!!!
"my brother currently lives with me,he is 34yrs old"
If you are, in fact, supporting your brother because he is incapable of living independantly, then you would be eligible for some tax exemption depending on where you live. You should either get another doctor or write to this one and detail how you have to care for your brother as he is incapable of living on his own. This is much better than having him try to live on his own and fall ill or become homeless.
Hello Boxergirl,
I'm a 37 year old Aspie living on my own in LLandudno Jucntion North Wales. My folks are close by for support but i msotly function okay.
The thing is, they are moving back to Leyland in December and I'm hoping to head back to Lancashire before long too. However, due to my severe problem with North Wales training agency and being labelled 'unemployable' by them (never mind the verbal abuse part of it I had to deal with...) I went on to sick benefit and form there to Incapacity which my medical notes have left me on.
I recently tried a rewhab college but it faield to produce a result. And I'm a bit sore that the tutor I had told me to pass my course, I'd have to learn to multitask. This is something I'm just unblke to do.
Anyway, it may be worth the time of both yourself and your brother to see if he's eligible for it after diagnosis.
Also I made myself a list for weekly ependiture. Note that the first five spell Frewgl ( A play on the word 'frugal' which is there to remind myself to take care with my money)
Food
Rent
Electric
Water
Gas
License (TV)
Council Tax
Phone
InterNet
Anyway I hope this may be of some use for you and I commend you for your work with your brother.
Hmm. Ask him a a logic question. Who is msot likely to be interested in which cash machine he uses? A friendly person or someone who uses the web to see a potential robbery target becuae I would say that that info you just gve us says he's giving out information that is best kept personal and private.
Point out that a cash machine is in essence, a safe. Then ask him if he would show a visitor to the house where his personal details were kept.
boxergirl, it's a shame the lack of ASD education in the professional community. Your brother obviously got a horse's *** (to be blunt).
Maybe it would be possible to do some research in your local area to find out who are the experienced diagnosticians of adult ASDs. And then go to the gp again and request a referal to that specific diagnostician. Make sure you focus on professionals who are experienced in ADULT ASDs. Kids and adults look different and a professional only experienced in kids is most times not going to know as easily how to identify an ASD adult.
All in all, a psychiatrist is usually a poor choice as a diagnostician for any kind of developmental condition. (And from what I've noticed, they seem to have the worst problems with their egos getting in the way of actually admitting they don't have enough experience to diagnose an ASD. )
But like I said, best thing is to research around and see who knows their stuff and then request a referal to them.
Yes, and labels don't have to be negative.
boxergirl, what's the website? I don't mind giving some backup.
This girl is only 16 so I can't see how she could be as much of an expert as she thinks. Still, her comments are obviously causing a lot of distress and somebody should pull her into line.
the website is called chavscumforum,i hope its ok to put this on.
the thread is called any problems ask auntie.
the girl claims to have a friend with aspergers so that makes her an expert.im still learning myself and so is my brother, but he needs encouragement, not some1 telling him hes deluding himself.thanks.
Unfortunately I have to wait until the mods activate my account.
