VH1 Classic is doing an auction where they're giving away celebrity motorcycles, and the money goes to benifit CAN. I honestly don't know much else, seeing as I heard them just mention it today. I know the auction ends Nov. 2.
I dunno if there's anything we can do, since they've started the auctions already. I guess you could write them about our P.O.V. on CAN.
So how do we organize something where bands will join US?? Perhaps we need to start thinking more pro-actively and combining our skills. But where to start? Do we have any lawyers in the group??
I couldn't agree with you more. I think active pro-actively actually gets things done, where acting reactively doesn't accomplish much. So where to start? I don't know of any charities promoting positive attitudes towards autism, but on another thread (Dirty Little Secret of the Autistic Community) we have started a discussion about what could be done to start a foundation of our own. It should be OUR voices that are heard. We know how to speak, therefore we should not allow others to speak for us.
As soon as I get enough focus, I will take a look at the site. At a quick glance it looks intriguing. We definitely need to be speaking out and not letting others speak out on our behalf!
There is another auction for CAN by Journey and Def Leppard.
http://www.vh1auctions.com/cgi-bin/aucti...000275300I wrote to Def Leppard's management in Dec. and Gareth called their office. They are not paying
attention to us.
Please send letters to them. I will get addresses soon.
What really really pisses me off about this VH1 auction is it is being repeated again. I wrote to one of the Def Leppard band members, who is a member of PETA, and their manager about CAN. Gareth also called their management office. Then neither of us is responded to. Then another auction the same is announced. PETA has CAN on their "do not support" list of charities. So either the man is a hypocrite or the band members just don't know what the management is doing or anything about CAN and their research. Most of the fans don't know either. They think that the money being raised is going towards children with autism -- but very very little money is going to families with autism. Most of it is going towards research on treatments (some good, some bad, some on animals) and genetic research (which will lead to prenatal testing and abortion).
I will demonstrate peacefully outside of any band's concert who comes to my city and raises money for CAN. I will post up and anyone who likes can join me. It is a little bit scary but if I can make up posters to put on my backpack, wear a t-shirt and hand out flyers -- I will not have to talk to people much.
