Because they started to do so long before the invention of a "south" and a "winter"... The alternative answer is that it takes to long time to walk + there's water in the way... So regardless of these recent "explanations", why do (some)birds move long distances twice a year? Do they have a concept of time? Are they smarter than they seem? Are the species of birds the true crown of creation? And us humans just a pathetic cul de sac in evolution?
the birds are said to have an inner compass due to a theory of nature.
The compass is set by the sun.
If the compass-system gets disturbed fks.: by changes in climate due to inviremental changes the birds may have their trip distroid which can have serious consequenses for them.(...)
Imy personal answer to your question is yes I think they are smarter then they seem.
