What is the point of ground hog day. Why is it celebrated?

I'm don't know how or why the tradition started. It was a great movie though.

Name another pointless or pointed celebration?

What keeps you cool?
Cool time machine idea!  I have written so many Back to the Future stories in my mind........    what year would you need to go back to, MNZ?
How's this for a story?

You were born Ella Jessica Parker to Jack Parker and Sophie Williams Parker, November 6, 1988, in Christchurch, New Zealand.  Sophie is a programmer for the software company LINC ($90,000 NZ/year) and Jack teaches engineering at the University of Cantebury ($60,000 NZ/year).   You are now 20 years old, 5 feet 7 inches, 121 pounds, blond hair, blue eyes (think Reese Witherspoon), popular, and attending Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology.  You can not remember being spanked, really, at least not off the top of your head.
Your little brother James Daniel b. April 22 1991 is still in high school but about ready to go to college too.....
I got the salary figures in NZ wrong for the various occupations, but the rest of it, popular baby names, most common surnames, schools and industries in Christchurch, BMI height weight for women age 20, the rest of it is spot on dude.  Thank God for the Internet....
And since it is MNZ's story, she wouldn't go to Australia, she'd stay in New Zealand.  And I painted her as Reese Witherspoon sort of Legally Blonde attractive and popular.......
Should you have a dog too, MNZ, and head up a sorority?
Go write it and tell us about it (legally blonde).
My Back to the Future story actually would include either Thomas Stone High School, Waldorf Maryland (10th grade version) or Shepherd University Shepherdstown West Virginia (undergraduate version).

a. TSHS version: pros and cons: even with names changed, less personal to other people, but also less dramatic, and allows for a thrilling chance to "pass it along" "act of kindness" knowing that one of the intervenees as a younger female is suffering a few counties to the north and the Marshes have the collective opportunity to intervene....

b. college version: Very personal, especially with regard to one individual, shows how Aspie wrecks interpersonal relationships in college years, and how I had to come to peace with women of my age making their own decisions with Aspie.  Focuses on two deaths in one junior year, one accidental surgical complication (my would be roommate), one (declared a) suicide (involving risky behavior crossing a railroad trestle http://www.angelfire.com/md/chrismarsh/yvonne.html)

Maybe better to stick with a.
