Speakers:

Keynote presentation by Lorna Wing, MD FRCPsych, OBE
The Spectrum of Social and Communication Disorders
Recorded keynote lecture at The Social Brain 2 – See the Bigger Picture, Glasgow, March 2006

One of the World’s leading experts on Autism will give a unique lecture on the evolution of Autism taking us back to the 1970’s when she and a colleague lay the foundation to their groundbreaking contribution to the understanding of the Autistic Spectrum.

Dr Wing will give an overall view of The Spectrum of Social Communication Disorders with definitions of the Triad of Impairment and Asperger syndrome being some of the subjects covered.

A privileged 25 minutes with one of the most important scientists within the field of Autism and related conditions.

Bill Colley - ‘Managing those Meltdown Moments’

Children and young adults with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) often exhibit challenging behaviour that is manifested as age-inappropriate temper tantrums and ‘meltdowns’.

An understanding of the causes of such behaviour can not only alleviate the distress that such episodes cause to all involved, but also allow the effective prevention and management of such difficulties when they occur.

This workshop will explore the precursors to ‘meltdowns’ and suggest practical strategies that may be of use to parents, teachers and those who care for young people with ASD.

Dr Richard Soppitt – ‘Autism - The Current Opinions and Challenges in the 21st Century’

Dr Soppitt will discuss his role as a child psychiatrist and relate this to the diagnosis and treatment of today’s generation of autistic children. The common issue of co-morbidities of disorders alongside the evidence for various educational interventions will also be explored.

Sandy Row – ‘Surviving the special educational needs system – How to be a Velvet Bulldozer’

Sandy Row is mother of 4 children, all of whom have Special Educational Needs; and all are on the Autistic Spectrum. Sandy and her husband have battled for years to achieve accurate diagnoses, Statements and assistance for their children - fighting two Special Educational Needs Tribunals (SENDIST) against the LEA barristers on the way. “A pea-shooter against a tank,” as Sandy wryly comments.

Aimed at parents/guardians of children with special needs, Sandy offers practical advice and guidance on how parents/guardians can ensure they receive the appropriate and best help from their local education authority.

Attendance is by reservation only and a donation of £35 per person will be required.

Lunch & refreshments will be provided.

All proceeds will be donated to the Mindroom Charity. http://www.mindroom.org
