Don't the people who come up with these theories realize that TV is new and autism is old, very, very old, as old as humans if you ask me?
My dad was a TV repairman, trained in WWII in similar work. WWII is when autism was "discovered", but it's not when it started. My dad is a flaming autistic, and he was here long before TV.
To me, the TV hypothesis is as offensive as the thimerisol (sp??) /mercury hypothesis. It is intolerant parents/people looking for an excuse, something to blame besides their own genetic contribution. Sorry guys and gals, the NT experts just figured out (from the Autism Genome Project) that autism is over ninety percent inherited. Ooops. Guess all the perfect NT parents of AS kids aren't so perfect after all.
whoever said tv caused autism was a moron.
i mean, do you realize how much tv a NT teenager watches?
and my entire family is autsitic, my younger siblings were only allowed to watch an hour of TV per day at the most, and they only watched the nature channel, and they are still autistic, big surprise.
thats only one of thousands of examples you can fine.
it IS true that most autsitics like cartoons more than live action, becuase its easier for tehm to understand the story without the subtle gestures.
If there was a relation, everyone would be autistic!!!!!!
I hate TVs. I mean, I like TV and all; there are some fun shows to watch, but no matter what's on, if there's a TV near me, I zone out on it. It's so entrancing! When I visit my mother-in-law, the TV is always on, and she thinks I'm a snob because I don't pay any attention to her. I can't help it! Even if I don't want to watch the TV, I'm completely incapable of doing anything but staring at it silently. My husband prods me and turns off the TV and says, loudly and right in my ear, "Hey. Honey, she asked you something."
Do any of you guys have this problem too? TVs are just so overwhelming.
They make it sound like a virus. These people are stuck with this condition for life, too much TV one winter isn't going to cause ASD's

"Yeah, I had Autism the winter of 62 and again in 75" BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH.
I"m pretty sure it's caused by the new pool hall in River City. Television With a capital 'T' and that rhymes with 'P' and that stands for 'pool'.

Yes I have this problem too, TV is really demanding my dad used to call it the one eyed monster, sucks you in and doesn't let go.
It's funny how most of the people who are on this thread aren't all that interested in TV and would definately not have it on when they have guests, whereas NT people will have it on all the time as background noise. Maybe we should send the thread to the people who wrote the article.

Hehe. Not true for me. When I'm at my friend's house I have to ask him to turn his music way down so I can talk because it is too distracting for me. He doesn't watch much TV because he gets glued to it and doesn't like that. He complained that at my house I have TV on "all the time". Actually, I don't. I am in silence 99.9% of the time. I confessed to him that I turn TV on when he visits because the silence suddenly feels awkward when I have a guest.

I usually put the radio or some cds on instead, stops me from being distracted and fills the awkward silences. Although most of my friends actually are alright with the silences.
