One of my teachers told us that if we ever disagree with something he says or we find something offensive that we can let him know of this.
Today we were discussing sleep and he mentiond an article stating that lack of sleep may give the same symptoms as LD. He asked for examples of LD's and people said things like dyslexia, add. He responded by saying "yeah, dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, LAZY(spelled out), all those diferent combonations." To me I found this rude. I have Dysgraphia, AS, probobly other disabilities as well(though never realy tested were I live.) I work hard for my grades, and often do an hour- three for homework, and have worked hard to take honors and AP courses, as well as studied for state graduation tests and was able to pass without accomodations that I was suposed to recieve. I am also working hard to excell on SAT/ACT.
Sure some kids/adults with LDs are layzy, but so are those wihtout.
I am not very comfortable directly speaking to him, but do you think that it would be acceptable for me to write this on a peice of paper and leave it in the clasroom?
I have also heard the LAZY thing from him before so I fear that it may be said again.
I also have LD, and most people think ADHD, but that could be a hormone problem or blood sugar something.
But im also highly gifted, such as when i did a placement test in 5th grade I should have been able to get in 8th grade advanced math, but since I tend to under-acheieve I was placed in 6th grade regualr math! I was appaled, and now in 10th grade it's basically too late to get moved yp. I understand the concepts of calculus, but I cannot do math without a calculator, and it doesnt help when you mixed up 6's and 9's, or swich the two numbers altogether 23's turn into 32's. It's very frusterting.
And I write very good stories, but I cannot spell for crap (i use spell check on here)but i usually catch my mistakes right away, and the actual creating letters is hard for me.
But it's quite easy for me to get all A's because im in regualr classes, it makes me feel stupid compared to my sisters who are less intelligent thatn me suceed in advanced courses.
myownmind and I are what you call twice exceptional, gifted and LD at the same time.
I think everybody must be LD at something, just some people it's not something you get tested on.
It always took me forever to get math or science concepts. I would have to have my friends tutor me over and over on them.
I was also in a remedial phys ed class at one time, because I failed the presidential fitness test. So even in something like kinetic intelligence someone could be behind.

I think you should give that note to the teacher, not leave it in the classroom. Some fellow classmates could get hold of it and start pestering you about it.
Some teachers are jerks (I should know - I am one ... a teacher, that is). I hope yours is not incorrigible.
PS: You should also make a copy and also record (take notes right afterward, if he answers by talking) whatever he responds to you... Just in case you and your parents have to complain to the school about him later on.
I find it upsetting that your teacher does not seem to think learning disabilities are real. They are real, and he risks turning people with them off to education by his attitude. Yes, some people use them as an excuse, but no more than the rest of the population uses excuses. I think a note to him about this would be good.
I think you should explain to him, that calling students with LDs lazy, is no different than calling a girl who dresses promiscuously a ***, or calling a male student who dresses uniquely gay. The latter 2 would get him fired, the first one should also get him pulled into the principal's office.
Also that LD students have struggled much more from adversity, not just from students, but from teachers. That if anyone is L-A-Z-Y, it's the teachers who whine and complain about having to make accomidations for LD students.

^ You're right!
Why would someone become a teacher if they're not willing to take ALL students into consideration? I can't stand teachers like that. Ill never forget the math teacher I had in the 4th grade (it was a special math class.) She was a horrible person(every student in that class was her pet except me.) Any question I asked her, she would reply with, "Why don't you understand? Everyone else does..."
My mother couldn't understand why my grades were slipping quickly and confronted me about it. I told her it was because the teacher hated me, which led her to calling a conference. When my mother told her what I had said, she replies with, "I am a teacher. Im not suppose to hate my students."
Well, needless to say, that didn't help at all. So my mom reported her to the principal (knowing my mother, she probably put fear into the principal.)
After that, the teacher was so nice to me for the rest of the school year, it
made me ill...
Sorry for the ramble. I agree that you should write a letter to your teacher, but hand it to him and keep a copy for your records, just incase you may need it later.
Best wishes!
Geeze, she even talked to your mother like she's an idiot. She should've said, "Well if you're not supposed to hate your students, then why have you been singling out my daughter for trouble?"
When I went to high school, it was like that, every class. My psychatrist said he heard, that the situation at my high school regarding acceptance of those who are different, was as bad as it was at Columbine.
He probably said what he said out of ignorance, not contempt.
But I'm really annoyed by overly perky/cheerful Teacher Assistants who treat you like you're slow or something. "Wow! You got your whole assignment done? Whoa, great job!" *False Cheer*
Yeah, wow... 8 questions... Really hard, I'm certain. I know the Special Ed assistants work hard, but LD doesn't mean "Low mental capability."
Q: Why did the student eat his homework?
A: He thought it was a piece of cake!
Ha. Ha ha ha ha. Ha ha. Ha.
I have a really good friend who had lots of learning disabilities and some misinformed people said he was lazy. Not so. Discouraged and despairing at times but never lazy.
Those people who said he and children like him were so lazy obviously never had to struggle with being highly intelligent and yet finding it hard to understand the work at at school.

Find an advocacy lawyer and sue the hell out of the entire school district under the ADA and IDEA laws. That teacher should be forcibly removed from pedagogy.

It's really fun to mess with the minds of the overly-perky teachers though! Like they'd say that, and I'd say something like, "Wow! You really think that you're doing your job, by just coming over here and praising me like a dog every 5 minutes! Amazing!"
It can so easily come across as being patronising when they act so perky. I guess it is better than if they have a disapproving attitude because at least it shows they are trying.
Ugh, god, it's really annoying.
"LYK OMG!!! Anna! You wrote down homework in your agenda!!!! *swoon*"
Wow!!!! It was such an impossible task!!!!! Where's my trophy?
Some professionals can certainly be very patronising. A doctor I saw said he could refer me to a specialist. I said did he mean a psychiatrist?
He said, "no, a psy chol o gist; they can teach you ways to change your thinking patterns". It was as if he had to spell it out - I was too dumb to know what a psychologist did.
