In a humour book written in a previous era I saw "eccentric" described as "mad and rich".  Would it be safe to say that "eccentric" now means "mad and talented" ?

I always thought that eccentric meant "mad but useful"

I just saw the Aspergia website for the first time... very nice.

However, i think Aspergia actually exists, and that I have been there.

It is called the U S of A ... and I suppose that deserves an explanation.

I am an American, living abroad for the past 4 years, with many connections outside US prior, and visits.  I firmly believe that the USA is currently the closest thing to Aspergia on the planet.

I think it's fair to say that eccentric folks are less tolerated in other parts of the world... I think many of them have tended to migrate west, particularly to England historically, and in the past two centuries or so, to the USA (I think the UK has become much less tolerant of eccentricity and inventiveness since the end of the Victorian era.)

I think this notion might help explain all the technological advances in those countries in recent centuries, and the lack of such advancement in societies that do not tolerate eccentricity and inventiveness so well.  One example might be the Arab world after 1500AD or so, but I think it is becoming increasingly true in Europe as well, and has long been true in the case of Russia, except perhaps for some "pet Aspies" working on projects of national prestige, like their space program.

Anyway, I was reminded of all this when i saw your site.  I wondered if others might think there was some validity to it.

Cheers,

Vits

PS  I realise this notion is not much comfort to someone in the USA who has not had much experience with AS tolerant folks.  However, I have to wonder how we would be treated in some other places!

What about Japan?

what about *accent* Soviet Union.
Aspergia already exists.

If you are reading this, you're already in it.

I am referring to the Gaia principle, where life creates an environment to suit it. It's like a fish being on land, but instead of growing lungs, it melts the ice caps and makes the whole world an ocean.

We are all interconnected because the earth itself, and all human life is actually just components of one giant organism, Gaia.

So if we aspies keep fighting for peace, love, and understanding, we will get it, even if that means the entire world changing to acoomodate us.

P.S. Read Allison's Majority on the fiction page for a shining example of what I mean, just slightly less dystopian.

This is not Aspergia, we're probably not accepted as much as you might think here. We still cary this stigma from a racist society... The one positive thing I can say about America as relates to the aspie struggles is that there's (atleast for the time being before Bush becomes dictator, should nobody stop him), we have more room to manuever politically than there probably is in Europe.
Remember though, we're not "alphas", we're "zulus"... I think honestly alot of aspie male's problems is fear of growing old alone, never even so much as a touch or anything from the opposite gender (if your a male). Involuntary celibacy is oppression though, and it shouldn't be taken lightly. It is a prooven fact that the sex drive isn't a mere want, it's a basic need to be fulfilled. The religious right has just conditioned society to be ashamed of it over many generations. If we're amoung our own kind, we won't be so likely to run into this wall of pre-concieved racist judgements being held against us and above us by the NT hate machine.

The opposite to a social "alpha" is an "omega".  Learn the terminology.

Now you're just randomly slamming things together with no causal connection.  Yes, sexuality is important.  Yes, the religious reich has been crazy on that issue.  But I've seen no valid evidence to the effect that Aspergic men in a less religious society would get any more nookie.  Do Aspergics in Europe get more yum-yum time than they do in the USA, or do the less religious Europeans just come up with different excuses to exclude us from the fun?

You say "racist" so very often, I wonder if you know what it actually means.

Funny.  I remember when Reagan was going to be dictator.  He was supposedly going to suspend elections in 1988.  I remember when G.H. Bush was going to be dictator.  He suspended elections in 1992 and Clinton never got elected, right?  I remember when NIXON was the dictator.  He was going to suspend elections in 1980, after all.  Oddly enough, for all the hyperbolic and hysterical rhetoric, there haven't been any dictators installed.  Of course, if enough people spout a bunch of nonsense about "dictators" that never happen, the public will be sufficiently jaded as to never do anything if a real would-be dictator comes along.

I never said that aspies would get some easier in a less religious society, all I said was that religion has bred society, rather religious or not, to act this way... Many people follow propaganda from the religious right without even knowing it, without even calling themselves christians.

My definition of racism is judging someone by a biological factor that is beyond their control. It doesn't have to be the color of their skin. Technically aspies are in many ways a new race, not defined by our skin color but by our nuerological make-up. Aspies can be any color. But we're all brothers and sisters reguardless.

Stop being an **** dude, I didn't start talking *** to you. Why do people always wanna act like they have a **** stick up their asses on these sites? Don't take your frustrations out on me, I'm living the same path your on. Why not take your frustrations to the streets in protest instead?
Interesting and highly possible.
Except for the Native Americans, who were already on this side of the pond, and the  Blacks, who were brought against their will, most second, third, etc generation Americans are descended from people who were decidedly unhappy wherever it was that they came from. These people would naturally include a few radicals, crackpots, Aspies, eccentrics...whatever name you wish to use. This is besides the greedy opportunists.

I have reason to believe that AS occurs on both sides of my family, especially on my father's side.
