Dr Who eccentric 'taunted to death'

Birmingham Post, England. Sep 21 2006

By Mark Cowan

A HARMLESS eccentric, nicknamed Dr Who because of the way he dressed, may have been taunted to death by a gang of yobs outside a supermarket.

John Clews, who often dressed in a multi-coloured scarf and floppy hat like the 70s TV time-traveller Tom Baker, died after a confrontation outside the Asda store in Bromsgrove on Tuesday.

Store CCTV cameras filmed him as he collapsed to the ground surrounded by a gang of teenagers who were jeering at him over his clothes.

Bachelor Mr Clews, aged 51, had a pacemaker and police believe the stress of the incident caused a massive heart attack.

He fell near a trolley bay in the car park and hit his head on the concrete floor, causing internal injuries. Asda staff gave first aid but he later died at Alexandra Hospital, Redditch.
This is the full story.  I find it odd that the paper doesn't add the usual... "police would like to talk to witnesses".  Are they not going to persue it as a probable manslaughter case?
I don't understand what good video cameras are if they are only to be used to see shady images of criminals reviewed days after the crime has been committed.
And why didn't somebody try and stop these yobbos from taunting this poor man.
In the words of Dagget Beaver, "That was NUTS!"
