Typical of the press to go on about "epidemics", and it isn't just autism. They also go on about an "obesity" epidemic. All that's happened is that the way of measuring these things has changed and more people fall into the categories: also, there is more community concern about these things being "bad".
I think autism has always, always been there, and that the amount of autistic people has never really changed. It looks like an "epidemic" because it is being diagnosed more.
And our society has become more demanding of conformity so anything away from the "norm" has become more noticeable.
