President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Wednesday outlined five key areas for focussing research in identifying and treating causes of autism, saying researchers must direct their efforts in bringing about a sense of equality among children affected by autism.

"Equality can be generated by prevention, early detection, appropriate training to acquire certain skills and engaging the minds of affected children in productive efforts to enable them to lead a normal life," he said.

Inaugurating an international conference on `Unravelling Autism: Causes, Diagnostics, Interventions,' organised by Tamana, an NGO for the mentally challenged and autistic and the Indo-U.S. Science and Technology Forum, the President said that research must identify if autism was both genetic and environmental. "There are no established biological markers. There are 20 autism related genes that have been discovered so far. What is inherited and how broad the inheritable genotype is, still remains unclear," he said.

With the emergence of new brain imaging tools, researchers can make a breakthrough in characterising the brain of autistic children. Other research areas suggested by Mr. Kalam included a study to find out if occurrence of autism was dominant in nuclear families or joint families or showed any bias on rural or urban environment; special psychological packages based on experience of mothers, psychologists and care givers to autistic patients should be evolved; if music and occupational therapy can improve the condition of children with autism.

Calling upon researchers to work with a mission of making humanity autism free, the President said that it was necessary to network research experience across the world so that a common knowledge base was developed and the data could be used through on-line web services.

Disclosing that he himself was working with Father George, a researcher, for the last three years on a research programme on mentally challenged children, Mr. Kalam said the research was aimed to find integrated solution using technology, software and hardware application to achieve a near normal functioning of the brain of mentally challenged children. "One day convergence of information and communication technology, medical electronics, bio-technology, nano-technology and mathematical simulation can lead to an integrated solution to their problem," he told the gathering of researchers and experts from U.S., SAARC countries, U.K. and Canada.

Mr. Kalam was confident that it would be possible to transform certain functions of the damaged portion of the brain by some triggering mechanism or by implanting a bio-chip to carry out those functions.Referring to the case study of a 12-year-old girl Nancy, given by Dr. Shayama Chona, President of Tamana, on how an autism affected person can recover to a near normal state due to the constant care in Tamana, the President lauded her efforts in evolving a certain methodology of life and education in treating and managing autistic and mentally challenged children.

"Equality can be generated by prevention, early detection, appropriate training to acquire certain skills and engaging the minds of affected children in productive efforts to enable them to lead a normal life,"

How about equality can be generated by stopping prejudice and actually practicing equality while allows for individuals, rather than clones to live?  Strange how a country that stills struggles with the remnants of the caste system could produce a person that would have this opinion.

i guess they still buy into the myth of autistics being retarted.  and is normal what we want?  i'm normal the way i see it, and normal is autistic.  and we don't want to be treated as defective and diseased people that need to be nt to have a good life.  we like our lives, and need people to stop trying to ntize us.  sigh.

Seems like another idiot the Curbies snatched up for their side. Sounds like he knows little to nothing about actual Autism, like the spectrum.
In the words of Mr. Horse, from Ren & Stimpy. "No sir, I don't like it."
Hello All, ici Ilja,

Ok, Anti-Cure, ala, ok... But did any of You bother to read the whole speech of the president, the verbatim text? What he really said, not the "quote" from a reporter???

I've just edited the link to the presidential website thus now anyone can click it instead of copy & paste it. If You still don't like it, he invites You to email him, it's just two clicks away...

Ok, Futurilla, I believe Your good in research, but try again following the link I found. In my recent previous research I didn't found any connection with curebee-organisations within the biggest autism-organisation in India.

Just give the idea that there could be someone willing to help a chance & try to utilize this goodwill...

Obviously, this speech is horrible (as quoted at least; sorry, I don't have time for the full text today).

As the world broadens the definition of who is autistic, the world also has to broaden it's ideas of how autism affects society, and, it follows, to narrow the concept of how much autism should be treated or eliminated.

Surely, he doesn't mean he wants to prevent the occurance of brilliant Aspie scientists.  But, his words say that he does.  I doubt he has any concept that he just said that.  Someone needs to tell him.
why do we need biochips and etc just becuase we're being ourselves?  oh wait, we don't fit in...sigh.

i don't want a chip telling me how i should act.  in some places, that's called obdecience training.

and the quote saying about autism affected persons, saying it's like a disease that hurts us, saying we recover.  i like who i am, don't touch me.  if you don't like me, too bad.  i'm not going to be nt just to impress others.  there are people that like me who i am.
It sill seems like they just got a undereducated patsy, to help fund Autism curbieness with "Awwws but look at the poor classicly Autistic kid!" Usually people who know nothing about Autism when faced with that, say of course this should be cured! Since C.A.N has no stock in actually educating people and telling them not all Autistics are classically Autistic, they're going to let this fool ramble on about how he wants to find a cure so they can get their funding from more impressionable people.
Oh goodie, a microchip in my brain!  I'll be able to interface with my computer far more efficiently.
 Alison
Wasn't there a song about girl with a microchip in her brain "that got switched to overload" and then she shot some people because she "didn't like Mondays"?

Yeah, the Boomtown Rats, "I don't like Mondays".  That was a hit in the early 80's (how I feel my age that I remember it!)

But what if they don't want to live a normal life? I enjoy my abnormal life.

Yeah and wouldn't living a normal life, in essence, involve having to be intolerent of non-normal people. Like, in movies like the Puppet Master or something where one guy goes to his friend and says something like "You've become one of THEM!!!"
