I will start with a short introduction...I am a 26 yr old female aspie with a 5 yr old aspie son.  I have known about AS for about 6 months now and have yet to find any helpful support in my community.
That being said, I am considering starting my own local support group because I find the existing one does not meet my needs.  My question is, how do I go about doing this? and, Are there any helpful hints or suggestions to make it more productive and supportive for members (rather than being a place where people sit and look at the ceiling)?  Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, I look forward to reading your replies. Thank You.
My advice would be to advertise in a free section of a local newspaper, and inform any existing local groups or agencies that deal with health care that you are starting a group, so that as many people as possible are aware of it.

Find a suitable location, in public, not someone's house for security reasons, and at the first meeting discuss what people want from the group so that its something to work towards, such as if it was a place to meet others and chat, or if it was for opportunities to discuss serious issues, and so on.

Then any members could be gaining something from it aswell as yourself, Gareth has started a group at his local college, and TheASMan is shortly to start a group in New York, offline groups for AFF is a strong goal, and if you need any more advice or help you can pm me or Gareth any time.
