I can't believe it, either.  I can only think that he wasn't fully on guard, because the creature that killed him is generally a lot less deadly than most animals he deals with.  It was basically a freak accident.

I haven't told the kids.  We just rented the Crocodile Hunter movie yesterday.  So wierd that now he's dead.

I read one quote that he died happy, doing what he loved.  So that is good.

But I feel so bad for his wife and chidlren ...
He took a lot of chances, it was inevitable. I hope he had a lot of life insurance.

LMFAO!!!!!!

When the experts reviewed the video of him dying, they said he pulled the barb out. Idiot..... Or at least stick your finger in the hole! He died cause he bleed to death.

DW a mom, tell your kids, it will be funny. Hilarious. And tell them when they are watching the movie. Now that would be funny. And video tape their reactions. It would be priceless!

I'm afraid I'm not getting the humor here at all.

As I understood it, the poison on the barb went straight into his heart.  That was enough to kill him.  I have not seen anything that said he bled to death.

I will not tell my kids and assume they'll laugh.  They won't.  They actually have empathy, both of them, including my AS son.

Although, he would be matter of fact like Amy about it.  That's OK.  But on the life insurance .. odds are, he was impossible to insure.

Well I mentioned the life insurance because he has 2 children, and they will need supporting.

He would have had some insurance at least while filming, that is in case something happens during the making of a film and it cannot complete.

Don't you think that the money he made from being an incredibly rich and famous TV star will last quite a while?

No. His wife will need to live on that in the short term. His kids are young and should get a trust fund to pay for their education when they are 16+.

Many people in the public eye can seem rich, but do not amass a fortune.

I can't believe he made such an impact on so many people. Almost every forum and website I visit has something posted about him and they all have nothing to do with animals!

If you had a large, sharp object though your chest, you wouldn't exactly have the chance to think things though.

Most people in that situation would panic. I personally hope that if it ever happened to me, someone would stop me from pulling it out and get me to a qualified surgeon ASAP.
I found one article that was critical of Irwin.

GREER: 'IRWIN'S DEATH WAS ANIMAL WORLD'S REVENGE'

STEVE IRWIN

Feminist icon GERMAINE GREER has sensationally blasted naturalist STEVE IRWIN's death an apt "revenge" by the animal world. Irwin died yesterday (04SEP06) after being stung in the chest by a stingray while diving on the Great Barrier Reef. However, the Australian author has little sympathy for his untimely demise, insisting the CROCODILE HUNTER star's cruelty to animals deserved a violent retribution. In a furious essay in British newspaper The Guardian, Greer also dismisses his impact as a conservationist, insisting his TV shows and zoo displays only taught children to "manhandle" animals. Greer fumes, "There was not an animal he was not prepared to manhandle. Every creature he brandished at the camera was in distress. "Every snake badgered by Irwin was at a huge disadvantage, with only a single possible reaction to its terrifying situation, which was to strike. "The animal world has finally taken its revenge on Irwin."

That is one of the dumbest things I've heard. And I'm not talking about Steve Irwin pulling out the barb.

Although I'm sorry to see him go, this was going to happene eventually considering his line of work. That being said, I find it ironic that a man who tackled crocodiles and deadly snakes was finished off by a fish!
It's a very sad loss and let's hope his wife and family can keep up his good work.
Hmm, yes. I thought that even she would have shown a bit more common decency though. He's done a lot more worthwhile things for the world than she ever has.
Its rants like hers that give feminists a bad name and reinforces the unfortunate stereotype that feminists are scary hairy bra burners.
It's true that Steve Irwin was far too in your face, and his tactics were misleading, but her article was just mean spirited. Some talkshow guy (can't remember who), on hearing his passing, said it reinforced that the baby Bob in front of croc incident was probably a mistake, because it just shows no matter how trained you are, an animal doesn't look at your resume. Yet he did so in a way that acknowledged all the good he did, and was respectful.
