Isn't he always changing his mind... mind you (no pun intended) it shows that he has an open mind!
I've just heard that the next Café Scientifique in Exeter is titled 'Stephen Hawking is wrong'.
http://www.ex.ac.uk/cafescientifique/
What he's wrong about it doesn't say. I had a look at this posting but unfortunately the link SimpleComplexities posted doesn't work any more. Reminds me of the haiku:
You step in the stream,
But the water has moved on.
This page is not here.
I didn't manage to get to the Café Scientifique, so I still don't know what Hawking was supposed to be wrong about. Was it his previous belief that information could not escape from black holes or his current belief that it can?! (Is that last sentence grammatically correct?)
I think the Big Bang theory is rather far-fetched, too.
Quick question too: if somebody has an open mind, does that mean anything can fall into it? ha ha.

"A closed mind is like a closed parachute."

I think that the notion that information can escape from an event horizon is fascinating, considering that matter and energy cannot. Well, at least they cannot in the traditional sense of what is means to escape.
How does this fit on to current theories of cosmology? Brane theory? String? Multiple Universes? Do me a favor and let whoever answers this particular question let me know via PM. Thank you.
All the best,
Well……. the links posted here above don’t work for me…
But since ‘Black-holes have been on my mind lately…  check this link out (below)… It’s about a black hole that is not exactly absorbing everything. Perhaps rather, it is exercising its power and complaining about an intruder, or just doling-out some of that ‘absorbed energy’…  cool anyway… hope the link works…

They didn't work for me either beammeup - but then I looked and realised the OP was 2004 - so no wonder. I do remember this news item though.
Interesting thread A true monothesist - The topic is fascinating.
A True Monotheist - who is the guy in your photo - and can I shorten your name?
OH - so that is what ATM means - I wondered

the penny drops.
I am glad he changes his mind. Shows that even geniuses can be wrong.
Jaime Escalante was a real teacher, who managed to teach Calculus in an inner city school. Â
My HS teacher maintained that girls could not learn mathematics, therefore he would not bother to instruct them (and my driver ed tesch that girls couldn't paralelle park).  I was in high school in the 60s.
My math education is sorely lacking
although I can paralelle park with the best of them: on the right and left side of the street
I saw that movie when it first came out (and several other inspirational teacher movies).  It was good - I think I'll rent it again.
They wouldn't teach me either Janet - Catholic all girls - secondary school. I didn't and don't learn maths well in the classroom.
For my nursing degree - I learnt Math on line - but really Math's applicable to nursing - never scored less than A+ this way.
I attended a nursing class math lesson oneday - but couldn't bear it - I walked out after five minutes.
I would subdevide AS by strengths: "MathWiz"Â Â "Lexical" and "Artsy"
Need to include: "Fartsy"... just kidding... I had a lot of cheese today...
Agreed though.... that exceptional talent exists that doesn't include mathWiz... My daughter is a mathWiz in her mind, but not with homework... (She hates math but was top in her class)
She is like a female version of Robin Williams... Can you imagine trying to parent such? No wonder I'm crazy... oh, I passed-on the genes....
Further subdivide?  of course... we're subdividing all the time :-)
