I find it so irritating.
The second worse thing is when they say that it's diagnosed so quickly and easily...well it isn't in this country! (UK).
The third worse is when they say that they just give meds for it all the time, not in this country either!
:!:
Someone posted that girls with ADHD appear different from boys, such as daydreaming a lot, and teachers thinking they are just not bothering to focus.
Do you find that?
btw I do not have ADHD myself, but my son does and so when people say it doesn't exist I know clearly it does having seen all he has been through.
Well I was originally talking about people who say that the whole ADD/ADHD thing is bogus and it doesn't exist at all.
Not really sure why they say it.
Maybe they have heard stories in the press that give a bad impression that it's just naughty kids being labelled.
*shrug*
Yeah, I hate it that the US APA and it's members are still mostly in denial that an ASD and ADHD can occur together.
I can understand the claim that ADD & ADHD may be OVERdiagnosed, that some children thought to have these conditions may simply need for their parents & teachers to be more patient and/or more consistent in setting limits...BUT, as an intelligent middle-aged woman who daydreamed her way through school and ended up in a low-skilled food service job, learning slowly & working slowly, I can say for myself that ADD meds have made a great difference for me. It's good to be able to do in 10-15 minutes some simple routine task that used to take me almost an hour. It's great to be more focused, more "present" in conversation, quicker to react. There is no doubt in my mind that ADD is real, and believe me, I had to persist in getting help, since ADD/ADHD is apparently harder to diagnose with certainty in adults, given the additional stresses of adult life which can also affect concentration & performance. I am glad I kept pushing, since my brain functions so much more efficiently with the right help.
Hey Cuz,
Your right, about ADD/ADHD, and don't forget your aspieness as well that can also be hard to diagnose, especially amongs us middle aged women
I was wondering if you think that i could have ADHD, or not ? I talk a lot and usually fast, without pausing, i fidgit most of the time , i feel tense and aggitated nearly all of the time, and find it very hard to relax. I am a 29 year old woman ,with Aspergers syndrome. Thank you so much.
Thank you for the information. I certainly do believe that ADHD exists ! one of my friends son has autism and ADHD.
Yeah I would not worry about the average person on the street. Do
a medline search and you will get over 14000 hits for ADHD. The experts
people with MD's and phd's know ADHD is real. I would guess of those
expert most will be atheist/agnostic. I would guess most the people who
say there is no ADHD are theist. They are not using logic. They are just using their own missguided thoughts.
Christians do use logic, too ! As a christian myself, with A.S. , i think ( naturally) in a logical way. My mother and brother have A.S., are both christians and they think in an extremely logical way.
For the ADD Evaluation results are: you may have ADD. For the Amen Brain system test: ADD combined type- may be possible, ADD inattentive type- not probable, Cingulate system Hyperactivity, Limbic system Hyperactivity & Temporal Lobe system - Highly probable.
Aren't Scientologists prone to deny the existence of ADD/ADHD?
The Scientologist actress Juliette Lewis was discussing psychiatric medications in an interview (can't remember the publication, but it was sometime in the last year or so) and spoke skeptically about diagnostic labels including ADD/ADHD, saying "There's money to be made," implying that these conditions have been invented by drug companies in order to exploit the public. (My take on that is: I don't mind paying for meds IF THEY WORK, which mine do. ) She seems to be in agreement with other Scientologists, most notably Tom Cruise, who dismiss psychiatry as a "pseudoscience" and oppose any use of psychiatric medication. Having been greatly helped by medication, I disagree with their assessment, but if they get good results from their vitamins, exercise and Scientology teachings, fine...*shrug* :?
Just for interest, I did these tests and the result of the first one suggested I "probably have ADHD". This was a bit of a suprise.
ADD Combined Type: Not Probable
ADD Inattentive Type: Highly Probable
Cingulate System Hyperactivity: Highly Probable
Limbic System Hyperactivity: Highly Probable
Basal Ganglia Hyperactivity: Highly Probable
Temporal Lobe System: Probable
I think a lot of people just have trouble with the idea that someone literally can't pay attention, even if they try very hard to, because it's something that's completely intuitive and effortless for them (most people). Even if they understand ADD and ADHD on an intellectual level, deep down they don't quite believe that a person could really, truly not be able to stop her focus from wandering.
Also, I think they might actually be underdiagnosed disorders in girls and women, because we usually aren't textbook cases. More daydreamy, restless space cadets than bouncing off the walls hyper or angry and disruptive.
