It is here in the usa. I hate it when people say they have adhd just cause they're lazy. Alot girls on my soccer team do that, and it's obvious they dont espcially since im around. Everyone has no problem listening to the coach talk and im picking at the grass or just off on a space mission or something. And when the coach says "ok Chris why dont you demonstrate." I have no idea what to do and the people who say they have add do, and i look like an idiot as i try to learn on the job. Im much more add like in real life than adhd, it's that my mind is hyperactive not so much my body. But it will be hard for me to get a real diagnoses of adhd since it doesnt affect my grades at all, i still get all a's. But my behavoir is much the same as on the soccer field. But i can say it affects the way i play soccer, Im not patient enough and i dive in a tackle and my mark seems to get away from me. If i could focus I'd be even better. But when i go for re-evaluation im gona try to say that i feel normal, i dont want to get anything wrong again, If i try to sound normal then the adhd will still show thus getting the right diagnoses. and if it doesnt then it means im normal and thats they things are supposed to be.
Hi. The fact that it does exist, and the possibility that it may not exist in everyone who claims to have it, are two different things. Fakery is something we need to keep an open mind about if honest debate it to be engaged in with society.
There have always been those in schools, often bullies, who don't like paying attention to hard work, and/or who are impulsive/aggressive due to their youth. If they see a chance to get an "easy ride" for their bad behaviour, a chance to "work the system" then they will often try to take it.
We need to be open about that possibility, because those we are debating with will surely bring it up.
Yes, but why do they say that? Probably because they want to imply that these people are malingerers.
The thing is, they're probably right, but only partly so. That grain of truth gives their argument its power, a power we can only really undercut by agreeing with them, but then saying, "but that's probably only a tiny percentage - any new syndrome such as this will always attract a few people using it as a "cloak of convenience".
What i meant earlier is that they say they cant focus and blah blah blah but yet they can, so they were just saying that to be stupid. And i actually have a chronic listening problem.
And i also hate it when they do something stupid or say something or have a loss of memory and then they say," Oh wow... that was an ADD moment" It's just so wrong. And they say they have it when it's un-official and and they have cleary done no research.
Someone posted that girls with ADHD appear different from boys, such as daydreaming a lot, and teachers thinking they are just not bothering to focus..
I dont think i said this but I think girls manifest hyperactivity a different way than boys, or at least I do. A boy is more likey not to be able to stay seated than a girl. But a girl is more likely to have a problem with talking to much. Also I see a girl with adhd will fidget and feel more restless than actually bouncing off the walls. I alway thump my legs like im a running motor or i accidently destroy my school materials. Or at practice I'll start digging a hole in the dirt while the coach is talking..
Basically im trying to say is that the girls are fidgeters and the boys are the bouncers. This is what i've mostly seen anyway.
Ugh, I am sick of people telling me that too. Some find it hard to believe that I am really BOTH an Aspie AND have ADHD.
In my experience.there is no question in my mind that ADHD is a real condition. It is not caused by bad parenting. It is helped by Ritalin. It is not underdiagnosed.
However, if you have ever watched "The House of Tiny Tearaways" on BBC3 (UK) you will see lots of kids that misbehave and are overactive. When the parents are shown how to give these kids the boundries and encouragement etc that the kids need, the kids' behaviour improves. I think it is fair to say that the child care experts see lots of kids that behave like the kids on "The House of Tiny Tearaways", whose parents might claim the kids have ADHD, but infact, the kids do not. So when the same expert is presented with a child that really does have ADHD, they are disinclined to diagnose.
This means that kids who really do have ADHD do not receive the support, understanding and/or medication that they need.
I know exactly what you mean Amy and it really gets me frustrated when i hear that kind of thing.
Yeah I would not worry about the average person on the street. Do
a medline search and you will get over 14000 hits for ADHD. The experts
people with MD's and phd's know ADHD is real. I would guess of those
expert most will be atheist/agnostic. I would guess most the people who
say there is no ADHD are theist. They are not using logic. They are just using their own missguided thoughts.
drifter4, what were your results on the screeners? im just curious.
i got basically the same results as you,

Aren't Scientologists prone to deny the existence of ADD/ADHD?
ADD Combined Type Probable
ADD Inattentive Type Not Probable
Cingulate System Hyperactivity Probable
Limbic System Hyperactivity Highly Probable
Basal Ganglia Hyperactivity Highly Probable
Temporal Lobe System Highly Probable

I sort of think I have ADHD, but I never got diagnosed with it nor took meds. My school grades are ok. I probably don't need meds to focus at school; but at home, I jump and prance all over the place like a monkey. I used to get poor grades at school because I was too lazy to pay attention. No one in my family will believe me if I tell them. They'd probably just say, "your just sugar high all the time, because you eat sugar of some sort every day." Plus I'm not usually in my hyper mode when I see the psychologist.
