I wasn't sure where to put it. Here or in the parent folder. But since it was 'talking' of schooling I thought I'd put it here.

I got this from an Asperger forum I am on. I thought it should be shared.
It is about how we see and teach children. Especially those
who are 'different.'

I find that very beautifully produced and written, albeit a little long for my mostly NT patience level, and there are some valid points, but much is exaggerated as well.

Why does my son have to learn language arts?  Because reading and writing hold the key to everything he one day hopes to accomplish with his love of science and math.  We've talked about it; he "gets" the reason we care, and he's on board with it, especially now that he is almost reading at grade level and actually starting to enjoy it.

If he could fly to the top of the tree instead of climbing, fine by me and, fortunately, fine by his school.  Shoot, if he isn't interested in the top of the tree, he doesn't need to go there.  I guess a lot of schools may still have an issue with this, but not ours, thank goodness.

Overall, I guess I have an issue with anything I see as a propaganda piece, no matter how much I agree with it.  You can't address issues in a sound bite, or even a 2 minute slide show.  And, yes, I'm sorry, even though I agreed with most of it, it struck me as a propoganda piece.
Oh.
I posted to quite a few places and most liked it. I didn't mean it it be a proganda thing. I saw it as rather nice. As did most I sent it to, Aspies and Nts.
Though one thought it was pretty senceless.  He questioned the point.

Oh well. To each their own.

Yes, to each their own.  I didn't mean to be harsh, for it is nice, but even nice pieces can have messages attached to them.  I guess I get too many sugary flag waving real propoganda pieces to be able to appreciate much of anything any more.  Especially when it ends with either a call for action or an "email for more information."  I get to the last line and everything nice before it gets lost, because I feel like I've been suckered one more time.  Sorry, it's just me and my cynicism.  Feel free to like and enjoy what you like.  Ignore me, lol.

No.  I ignored the part where is said "To get more .. yada yada yada" .
I don't go for that. Like chain e-mails, I ignore (and delete) what I think are a crock and laugh (or enjoy) the rest.
If I could have I would have removed the last bit but I don't think I could have.

For those of us who tend to get twitchy when forced to go at a pace dictated by someone else:

Also, it should have ended at "Doctor Owl said that the bee's wings were too small for flying and they were in the wrong place."

Everything after that point was of far lower quality.
Don't be a Kangaroo? Was the story written by Aussies? j/k

<Chuckle>

Hmm.  No comment, except that the person who put the photos together seemed to really like sunsets.  Oh, and not to be didactic, but the second picture of a "zebra", the one in silhouette, that's actually a horse.

That was a beautiful slideshow, but it could use a better final line.

Instead of "Don't be a kangaroo!" I think it should be "Don't suffer the fate of the kangaroo!"

According to the slideshow, the kangaroo suffered because he was born to run on two legs, and always won races. Despite the kangaroo's success in running, the teachers made the kangaroo run on four like a "normal animal". That was how the kangaroo failed at running. He was forced to do something the "normal way", which crippled his success, which came from eccentricity.

Some people just aren't meant to do things the normal way, so they find their own way to success.

I loved the music. *piano fan*
Hmm, interesting. I had a quick squizzy at the website and it seems very well set out.

I'd probably have been an eagle to start out with but then became a kangaroo. Maybe that's why I am still at quite a low level clerical job after many years and feel that some people are trying to hold me back and don't appreciate what I do.

Still, the somewhat lacking social skills would have a bearing too.

Schools in general seem to exist to turn out little carbon copies. I don't think there is too much reward for creative thinking or individual differences beyond very narrowly defined limits.

the point isn't that your son shouldn't have to read and write because he is not good at it. the point is that
a) children deserve choices in how they are educated and what they learn
b) commonplace school systems (as well as childrens parents) undermine their learning and accomplishments
c) multiple intellegences are not acknowledged or appreciated in our society
and that is all i'm gonna write because i could go on forever on the subject traditional school systems.

from what i can see the focus on this article as well as the entire site is on raising children, not aspergers
