This movie is by genius Vincent Gallo - he wrote it, Directed it, starred in it (along with the beautiful and excellent Christina Ricci), and even composed the music. I don't call people genius lightly, but having done all this on a movie this wonderful, he must be at least nominated for the title 'genius'.
Gallo gets pitch perfect performances from himself and all the other actors, which include some famous names who aren't just here for show, but are perfectly cast (Unlike the superstitious casting of Alec Guinness in 'A Passage to India'). Besides Ricci, we have Mickey Rourke (in a cameo), Anjelica Huston and 'Airwolf's Jan-Michael Vincent - wonderful to see him in it.
The music sets the mood of the piece perfectly, and only in one single sequence does it stand a little proud of the visuals - and Gallo can certainly be forgiven this - a second viewing might show this to not be an error at all.
The script is steeped in wonderful wit... it is wonderfully written which in lesser hands might have come in at a little on the wordy side, in Gallo's hands, it is sheer joy.
The opening hunt for a place for Gallo to relieve himself (pee) is not only hilarious but in no wise superficial to the plot. The highlight for me is where, although he has endevoured his very best to find a legal place, he fails and, in desparation, unzips behind a car which, right at the moment before he starts, drives away. Even in this the world is set against this pathetic, angry and yet wonderfully simpathetic character - marvellously played by Gallo himself.
The script is utterly perfect and there is no way of telling if this is comedy or tragedy right up to the end - which I am not going to give away.
Seldom have I felt myself so involved with the destiny of a character on screen.
And what a glorious odd couple Gallo and Ricci make... Honest guys, this is a DVD to buy and cherish.
