I kinda wish I hadn't signed up to Autism Speaks newsletter. I did it out of curiosity but it freaks me out what a well-oiled publicity machine they seem to have.
...
Some actors I like are in these photos. Some actors who are famous for playing quirky and socially dysfunctional characters...
I doubt they understand[*] the irony of what they are doing, when they make eccentric people popular onscreen and then go ahead and support those who might like to wipe a whole section of eccentric people off the face of the earth.
[*note: I don't mean to imply that actors are dumb, I just think they probably don't get time to look at all sides of an issue. If it sounds like a good thing to support, they probably just go with their first impression, "this is going to help those poor kids" or something. Like most people would, I think.]
mike lupica is one.
if i got big time, i would wear an infinity sign, i'm not a puzzle (well, kinda, but i like it that way) wanting to fit in, i'm a person.
Sir Charles? I'll be damned, there's someone we can convince. I'll write him an email.
Write an e-mail to these people. If you're a fan, tell them and tell them how much it disapoints you. And tell them why: Autism Speaks doesn't support education or support groups, mention the horrors of the "Autism Everyday" video, etc. These people really don't know what they're doing; they think that they're helping children. They just need to be informed. The only way to stop Autism Speaks is if a lot of us take actions such as this, in my opinion (as well as actions such as peaceful protests, etc).
Here are the people in the photos. Does anyone have contact information for them?
Model and actress Molly Culver
Actor James Caan
Jonathan Antin from Bravo's Blow Out
John McGinley of Scrubs
John Krasinski of The Office
Dennis Miller
Crossing Jordan star Jill Hennessy
ER's Mekhi Phifer
Today's Matt Lauer
NBA great Charles Barkley
Donald Trump (Gilbert/Blue Pixel)
Today's Meredith Vieira
Just thinking, do you think if Katie Couric was still on Today, they wouldn't have gone ahead with this. She seemed pretty smart about Autism.
Today is an NBC show, and Bob Wright is blatantly abusing his corporate position to slander autistics and hype Autism Speaks on everything that belongs to NBC.
Writing letters to anyone whose paycheck comes from NBC is completely useless. What's needed is a shareholder revolt. Anyone here want to buy some NBC stock and show up at the next shareholder meeting with a proposal to fire Wright?
Dose anyone know why this is suposed to be a sad tragedy?
Co$t$ money.
In the minivideo that I saw, he wrote something and a phantom hand came out of the side of the picture and erased part of it.
Message: Autistics make mistakes. (duh, aren't we human?!?!?!)
What they're doing is a overdramatic representation, of how Autism "steals away a child, like a stranger in the night". How they can be learning one minute, then it's like a ghost takes away what they've learned as in regression. In other words, it's just a pathetically overdramitized view of ignorant people, who want to act as if someone not going straight on the path through learning is a tragic case. So the curbie parents can go on feeling sorry for themselves
mike lupica also wears the pin.
here's a letter i wrote to lupica, and you are free to send this letter to anyone on this list.
(name of puzzle pin wearer), I have noticed you have been wearing an Autism Speaks puzzle pin, and many autistics have been very disturbed at that.
Autistics are not all the helpless and broken tragic children as Autism Speaks likes to represent us as. They portray us as bad and unwanted to society, and misrepresent autistics. They also promote the idea that autism should be hated and a disease that has purged America’s children, which is not true. Autism is just a difference in neurological wiring, and not necessarily a burden to society. We grow up and live happy and productive lives, and are still autistic, not despite of being autistic. Autism Speaks has also warped the images of autistic families as all desire their children to become cured, which isn’t the norm for families of autistic children, who have pride and joy in their autistic children, and do not engage in trying to change them into non autistic.
Autism Speaks raises all their money towards research to cure autism, even though they say that support for autistics is under funded. This may lead to the idea that Autism Speaks does not support autistics living now, but instead just looking towards tomorrow. Furthermore, autistics are not asking for a cure, but instead acceptance. A cure, according to the autistic community, would mean destroying the autistic person and replacing them with a non autistic one, because autism is a part of autistic people that cannot be removed without destroying who they are.
Autism Speaks commissioned a video called “Autism Every Day” that has been very controversial among autistics and parents of autistics, with its false portrayal of autistics as horrible monsters, a burden for everyone around them, and in forever tantrum. A big problem was that the video subtly condoned murder of autistics, and praise of parents who kill autistics, with a comment by one of the mothers in the video that she didn’t drive off a bridge with her autistic daughter because she had a non autistic one at home. This is very disturbing seeing that autistics want to be seen as equal human beings that are neurologically different instead of a defective person, or less than a person.
(puzzle pin wearer), I suspect you started your Autism Speaks sponsorship because you felt that you wanted to be a part of a worthy cause. I assure you, Autism Speaks is a disservice to autistics and many families of autistic persons, but now you are enlightened to the other side. Thank you for your time.
Your letter sounds great, bravesj858! If I find any of the e-mail addresses for the celebrities, I'll post them here.
I looked for Sir Charles, but couldn't find a website. He's going to need one if he plans to run.
