Hello everybody.

My name is Lucy, I'm 32 and live in the UK. I was provisionally diagnosed with Aspergers' Syndrome yesterday by my family doctor, though this is something I have suspected since first finding out about AS nearly a year ago when my son (3) was referred for assessment for classic autism (he is HFA). As I have read here, I always felt different, I didn't and still don't understand the world, and I struggle with many sensory issues.

My doctor is referring me to a psychologist for formal assessment and subsequent behaviour management techniques (coping strategies, I think/hope!).

Has anyone here been diagnosed following their child's dx? I was initially wary in case I was fitting my memories of social situations etc to the diagnostic criteria but my husband, who has known me since I was 15, helped me take the Aspie quiz, by talking through the options and helping me to be cautious in my answers, and I still scored 167/200....

I am also a recovering alcoholic, I believe many of my AS symptoms may have gone unnoticed for so long (to others, I mean) because I have used alcohol for so long to 'cope' with life. I've been sober just over 6 months and life has improved in many ways but my aspie traits are again coming to the fore, which is why I approached my doctor for a dx and for help with coping strategies.

Looking forward to getting to know you all.

Lucy
Real bad combination, I know how it can feel, I am a recovered gamma-butyrolactone addict myself, and AS/HFA (not sure which, AS is my guess), do you get constant anxiety, insomnia, maybe chest pain ever since?

Thats me (GBL is quite similar in pharmacology to alcohol, just not quite so broad spread, and more potent), so I feel for your situation.

Ave
My anxiety is levelling out thanks to the prozac *sigh* but yes, I do suffer badly with it. Insomnia too.  But not chest pains, thankfully.
