I was browsing wikipedia a while back, and it mentioned that aspergers is somtimes attributed to the effects of gluten intolerence on early childhood development. It went on to say that Aspergers is often seen in conjunction with Asthma and Gluten intolerence. As I fit all three criteria, this was a sort of "Hmmm..." moment for me. Anyone else out there know more about this?
The University of Sunderland have researched this a lot.  Website down at the moment, temporarily I assume.

my dad had ashma as a child, but i think that was more becuase of the smoking in the house, becuase he doesn't have it anymore.

i was misdiagosed with ashma for about a year in my teens.

i think it's legit that autistics may be more prone to ashma and other allergic reations.
Interesting ... I guess what jumps out at me is that all have seen an apparent recent rise, all have unkown causes (albeit many theories), and all are possibly linked to something in our modern lifestyle ... I would assume its more of a correlation than cause and effect.

As for my family ...

My son is Aspie but neither of the others.

My daughter is developing Asthma but neither of the others.

The Asperger's Wikpedia page has gone to hell lately, too many Aspies (or even self diagnosed aspies) adding their personal observations, theories and hearsay or agenda's to the page, when Wikipedia is supposed to be a purely factual information site.

I had childhood asthma but that's pretty common across all groups - aspie or no, and that's cleared up long ago, and I've never had a gluten intolerance I'm aware of, they don't sound to me much like solid diagnostic criteria

The only food intolerance I have is bad flavor!
I am actually tired of people telling me that I should try a wheat/dairy/preseravative/caffeine-free diet and all my health problems and my Asperger's will be cured.

I do not have celiac disease.  I used to get sick because we found out our refridgerator was not working properly.  There is no diet that will fix all my health problems and Asperger's.  If a special diet does help someone else, fine.  I am just tired of people suggesting it INSTEAD of TOLERATING my AS.
M, good point that. If someone thinks that a diet will help them, then by all means they should try it but it's a worry when they believe it will "cure" them or others, particularly when those "others" are their children.
The reason why aspies may get allergies is because of our increased sensitivity.

I only have one allergy as far as I know. I'm allergic to ragweed, so I really really REALLY hate spring. Due to global warming, ragweed population will increase greatly and my allergies will get worse every year. Last year was terrible. I can't try to imagine this year.

I've never seen any ragweed in my town, but I know that ragweed pollen can travel great distances up to a few hundred miles, so I'm screwed anyway.

Since ragweed can produce so much pollen and multiplies quickly, complete destruction of the ragweed population is basically impossible. I wish them scientists would engineer a virus or something that only attacks ragweed plants, and release them all over the place.
Get those freakin' cashew nuts out of my nose, I'm allergic!

I also have milk protein intolerance, which doesn't mean that I can't drink milk, at least without any obvious consequences. Then there's fish, which I am allegic to. It is always the proteins I am allergic or intolerant. When I was a kid I was also allergic to milk and egg protein. Food allergy can be trained off, but not intolerance.

Oh, so an allergy to milk is real.

A really long time ago, I created a character named Himno for a stupid story of mine and he happened to be allergic to milk. He had been ressurrected last year as Hinonu, but I still don't know if he's still allergic or not. He hasn't had any contact with milk-based products since.

I think some southeast-asians can't digest milk after a certain age.

My mother is gluten-intolerant, and has a lot of AS traits. I'm healthy as anything--no allergies, and I can eat whatever I want--but I'm even more Aspie than she is. But considering I probably have genes for gluten intolerance, even if they're recessive... There could be a connection somewhere, at least for my family. Maybe the genes for autism are near the ones for allergies and food intolerance.

Being self diagnosed doesn’t necessarily make an individual's views any less relevant than someone who's got an official diagnosis.

I had childhood asthma. I also have a degree of gluten and lactose intolerance which can set off other allergies. I'm not sure what this means, it could just be a coincidence.

That being said, I do except that there is inaccurate information out there concerning AS. And we do have consider the source of the information to judge its relative worth.
