I have just read through this entire thread and some of the links.  I just cannot comprehend how this can happen, how it can be allowed.  It's public knowledge that they are shocking children and no-one closes the place down and puts the directors and staff into jail!?!

What they are doing is torture - there is no other way to describe it.

It's not medical treatment, it's not therapy - it's torture!

I'm sorry to say it, but I'm beginning to understand how the US can encourage torture of Iraqi prisoners.  After all, it's acceptable to for their own children to be tortured at the state's expense.  Horrific!

The official name for this sort of treatment is Aversion Therapy. Aversion Therapy is currently discouraged by both the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association due to its ineffectiveness at actually changing anything and its intense cruelty. Aversion Therapy does not treat the underlying condition so much as suppress the symptoms for a time and often causes the subject to become violent. One famous case of Aversion Therapy's failure was when a young man treated for Dissocial Personality Disorder went berserk after the treatment was applied and killed five people, the two doctors and three nurses who administered the shocks.

Aversion Therapy has also been tried forcibly on Homosexuals. They attempted to change sexual orientation by administering shocks, forcing people to ingest vomiting agents, and forcing people to smell ammonia. This was also an extreme failure and according to their own data, they had a success rate of less than 1%. They also managed to permanently harm people and in at least one case kill someone. People still suffer from nerve damage from the shocks as well as other psychological issues.

Aversion Therapy is despicable and should be banned, but unfortunately every time someone tries, they are shot down because there are people that labor under the delusion that pain and fear can be effectively used to change people's behavior. It doesn't. All it does is suppress the symptoms and cause problems later in life.

There is cameras in showers and you are watched, with the shockers on(thats a GED shower). Cameras everywhere, no privicy in rooms. Basicly like 1984.  In many ways.  The staff could be sick perverts that watch the females change... that's traumatisng for them.  Having to change clothes and knowing somone is watching you, but getting electroshock if you don't.
How could anyone support this. The goverment funds it out of taxpyers money...  terrible.
it says in the report... "...for more than 8 hours...or restrained for more than 5 days in a week..."
There is things that shock you if you take your hands out the pockets.
How is restraint and electroshock going to help a Post traumatic stress patient.
This wouldn't be authorised in prisons so why to "Help" sufferers.
There is heaps more... the emotional impact of the "treatment" is not monitored, only the undesired behaviours.
Lots of services on the site are not used.
Kids are not encouraged to talk to one another.
Can't slouch or stop working for 10 seconds, even if sleep deprived be shocks.

Please vote against this on this site. Please, this torture needs to be prevented. Imagine if you were there...

Three Words: OH MY GOD! This is horrible, like Tiger of Malaysia said, line them up, shoot them all.
I still don't get why parents would send their children there either... yeah the site looks "good" but any idoiot off the street would know you have to dig further into a school's history before sending your child there... dang... with all the publicity and the stories that'd come out in the past years....
My mother is a sunday school teacher... when she say yesterday that I was upset about something she started reading over my shoulder... after reading a bit she grabbed the mouse... and shut the page. She told me that all we could do was pray that accidents started happening there... and not with kids... with equipment... like computers getting bugs and such... hmm... I wonder....

There have been accidents there, I believe children have suffered burns from the electric shock equipment and there has been one death, I think.  From what I've read about this place, efforts to have it closed down have been thwarted by the efforts of parents, among others.

It is absolutely horrific and I really fail to understand how this can be allowed.

They have a statement on their website about medication. I think it applies just as well to their so-called "treatment":

Quote:
Heavy aversive therapy: This often does not work and sometimes has dangerous and irreversible side effects. Some of the negative side effects of [JRC] may not be discovered until years later when it is too late to do anything about the damage it has done.

Ooh no ya think?! oh wait... you don't think...
Dang...can people be that dense... oh wait they can... sorry guys but this whole issue (and I know I'm not the only one) leaves a bile taste in my mouth.

I pray something extraordinary happens in that place that will finally shut it down forever (whithout loosing innocent lives -- ...hehe maybe one or two guilty lives... mainly the jackass  that runs the place...who calls himself a doctor)

I did look at its website once and only once.  I'd like to know what their interior designer smoked before getting to work on the place.  If there's any visual stimulus in this world that could make somebody vomit, that's got to be it.

As for nobody carrying an extension cord around the neck on Pull The Plug Day, just another reason people from this site should start meeting IRL whenever possible.  Kind of hard to rally from behind a keyboard, don't ya think?

Well... it is kind of hard for us to meat in real life because many of us come from VERY far away... although it would be a very great thing to do it would need a great deal of money to do it with...

HEADS UP!

I like watching Law and Order and today they aired an episode called
"CRUEL AND UNUSUAL"  the info on it is as follows:

"After learning controvertial therapy may have caused an Autistic boy's death" It kinda smells like JRC ...  this "doctor" takes the "unwanted" kids...
etc..... um go to tnt.tv and look for the episode (Season Five)
I think they're upping it to JRC... seriously what I'm seeing in this episode is scary ... alright um... check it out http://www.tnt.tv
I think this is the link to the episode...

IMDB says the original airdate of that episode was 1995. It would be horrible if the L&O creators (or NBC for that matter) knew places like the JRC existed but never did anything about them. Instead they decided to make them an episode plot basis to acheive thier selfish goal of increasing TV ratings.

No not really... the L&O writer Dick Wolf is known for his extremely diverse and controversial eppisodes. I mean gosh he made one about the war in Iraq from and Iraqi's point of view (something about those tortured prisoners etc)
anyhow... think about it... with that episode the general public got a tiny taste of what places like that are. I mean God! Even after reading all the stuff about the JRC and watching that horrid video... watching that L&O episode kinda freaked me out more...because I felt like I was there in that courtroom and out in the street investigating (if you know what I mean)
God I wish we could ALL rally together and shut this hellhole up for good.

This lot at the Judge Rotenberg centre would be right at home in the dark ages before medicine became better than witchdoctory. Absolutely shocking (pardon the pun) since they seem to love this "treatment". Quite obviously anyone who doesn't comply with the "norms" is a target. Certainly wouldn't want that to be "recommended" it makes the Spanish Inquisition look like a charity.

Does anybody got any stats on how many people were killed while undergoing the electric shock treatment at the Judge Rotenberg Center? If the Senators and Representatives see how many people were killed while at JRC, they might take some action, along with the parents, especially if they have to bury their child.

...wait, killed?  They're not using dangerous electric shocks, are they?  It's just supposed to be uncomfortable, there shouldn't be any risk at all of serious harm...

Also, please refrain from belittling historical tragedies by comparing them to traumatized little autistic kids.  The Spanish Inquisition killed an awful lot of people.  Thus far all JRC has done is zap the stimming behavior out of some autistic kids, which is bad but does not merit comparison.

The actual FOI report on this mob has so many blacked out sections one really wonders what goes on there. If these things were done to anyone else there would be such a screaming match it would be heard around the world and banned for ever.

Electric shocks do kill people, especially if the person administrating them may send too much. In fact, several US states had used electric shocks for execution.

And, for another thing, I did not post anything about the Spanish Inquisition at all, so don't accuse me of comparing the JRC with the Spanish Inquisition. I simply asked to see if there are stats about anyone at JRC being killed by electric shocks.

...there is a teensy difference between an electric jolt designed to cause discomfort and the electric chair; the latter requires much, much more energy.  The former should never lead to death except through gross negligence or unforgivable overuse (even with tasers, which are much, much stronger, there's only tenuous evidence that they're really dangerous.)  It's the difference between spanking your kid and beating him to death.

I didn't intend any of that reprimand to be for you, though (it was micgrace who posted "it makes the Spanish Inquisition look like a charity") I was just expressing my shock and horror at the idea that the JRC caused deaths.  If they have then they're much, much worse than I had thought...

So far...I think someone meantioned that there were 4 known JRC related deaths ... correct me if I am wrong.
