AUTISM SPEAKS LAUDS UNPRECEDENTED HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES MILITARY APPROPRIATION FOR AUTISM RESEARCH

-- Landmark Spending Proposal, Which Recognizes the Unique Plight of Military Families Impacted by Autism, Comes After More Than Three Years of Advocacy by Autism Speaks Volunteers --

(NEW YORK, NY -- June 13, 2006) – Autism Speaks, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness of autism and raising money to fund autism research, today praised the House of Representatives Defense Appropriations Subcommittee’s passage of its FY 2007 appropriations bill which, for the first time, includes a line item for $7.5 million for research on autism spectrum disorders. The bill must now pass through the Joint Conference Committee. Each year the Department of Defense invests tens of millions of dollars in various medical research programs. In FY 2005, for example, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and prostate cancer were among the diseases funded by the DOD. This appropriation measure would mark the first time such spending has been directed toward research into autism, a disorder that now affects one in every 166 children.

This is a watershed moment for the autism community as we continue to seek federal funding for autism research that is commensurate with the scope of this epidemic,” said Bob Wright, co-founder of Autism Speaks. “We are grateful to the members of the House of Representatives whose leadership and appreciation of autism’s particular toll on military families made this possible. This funding will help drive the research that will eventually yield the answers about autism that we all seek so desperately.”

Based on the most recent prevalence estimates, at least 4,600 children and minor dependents of active duty families have autism, and the cost of their treatment exceeds $200 million per year. Autism Speaks has been advocating for military spending to support autism research for more than three years, beginning with the efforts of the National Alliance for Autism Research (NAAR), the organization it merged with in February 2006.

"This new appropriation is the result of a concerted effort by the co-chairs of the Congressional Autism Research and Education Caucus, Representatives Chris Smith and Mike Doyle, the Members of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee and a group of determined volunteers," said Ann Gibbons, a member of the Autism Speaks board of directors who has led the organization’s efforts to convince Congress that this funding was needed. "Dozens of our volunteers have met with their congressional representatives repeatedly over the last few years, urging inclusion of autism in the Department of Defense medical research budget. Their persistence has paid off, and we thank the members of Congress and their staffers who have listened to our concerns and are addressing this urgent need for autism funding."

Bold added by me. I received this in an e-mail, so I don't have a source link.

I'm not sure what this committee is or if we should be writing to them.

And they want to take money away from these?

I'm not familiar with this. Does anyone know what it is?

what the heck is this?  miltary familes with autistics a burden...i find this extremely offensive.  my dad was in the miltary for 25 years (since retired), and i was not considred a problem for their lives.  i didn't know any other autistics that were also miltary brats, mabye becuase most of this happened before the mass diagosis of the 90's and the edpiedmic.

it wasn't a toll for me to be in the family...i think it was better than the alterntive life it could have been, which was living in the ilk that was new orleans (we left in 91) and innaprotate services, and the yuck.  they certianly didn't have the education there, so moving alot i think was beinfitcal to me, as i wasn't bullied by the same set through my childhood, but by diffrent sets of people over a few years, and there was always hope seeing new places.

i'm sorry, i have to speak out about this, the miltary was part of my childhood, and i'm sure alot of people would say the same thing.  i didn't know curebies ran rampant in the miltary, but i can see that happening, as some of the parents could be rigid in their belives like the miltary, and this could effect many familes, but it's unique....

btw, why is treatment expensive?  what are these people doing, cheleation and aba?  i guess the curebies want a sustained relationship with their group of curebies and don't desire move.  moving was a pleasnt experince, seeing new things and places, i always liked it.

bob wright, go away!!!  you are a curse for our future brothers and sisters.
I seriously don't get where these "treatment" figures the US government keeps using to justify stamping autism is coming from. The sudden US government intrest in curing us almsot feels like we're their newest battlefront "The War of Autism"

I suppose next they'll be having us locked up and tortured... oh... wait... they already are
Autism Speaks, a non-profit organization

Are they a charity too?

What country is this?  I should think a country should be spending their allocated military budget on weapons, training, equipment, wounded veterans etc.

Americans are #1 dumb for not having a national health programme.
