How is 1.6 million USD more realistic than 580,000 USD?
Because that was the cost for another option we considered, I just don't quite understand in what way that the higher sum would be more relistic than the lower one.
It's not just money, but also the fact that there's a lot more planning and such that has to go into building an artificial island.

This would be a good way to see if it's feasible to do something like this or not.
The $580,000 option was a natural island just fyi

Amy, have you considered the ammount of stuff you can actually fit on one small farm with one tiny island nearby?

As for the benifits, yes that is true providing that the person trying to claim benifits does not actually own any part of the project.
Humz, not sure it is every single last bit of land in that picture, anyone know the actual size in acres or something?

As for expanding later yeah that could happern as long as the neighbouring landowners intend to sell up and move out, if not then you can't make them.
1.6 million is amazingly cheap. They have homes already built there? Real Estate prices are so high that single houses are selling for that in my neighborhood.
I would suspect that the buildings there are at least partially degraded, either that or it is so far from anywhere they have had issues selling it.
The area is quite depressed in terms of employment as it's quite remote.  My mum's uncle lives up around there.  That would explain the relatively low price.

It would depend what field you were in, tourism does well, coachfitters would do badly.

Tourism is very seasonable, I used to live along the coast in Prestatyn and there were lots of jobs available in the summer, but during the winter it was a bit dead.  Plus if I remember right there's very little public transport links to the area, the closest railway stations to Cemaes Bay would be Holyhead or Valley and they are close to an hour's bus ride away.

Still it's a trade off, somewhere more accessable is more money.

I don't think there would be much point in moving to a highly populated area.

I think you're right.  Personally I'm okay where I am, I've got the double job that lets me work around issues and people who I'm comfortable with and I would be a bit scared of dropping that for something brand new, but the island/community idea is a great one.

Then you could come and stay for a holiday

That would be good, I've never been confident enough to go off somewhere on my own for holiday.

I must say I don't really like this idea. If only because this place knows winter. But I don't like the idea of having NT's for neighbours. What if they try to force us away. You remember how Hasit's Neighbours receacts to having an autistic man in the neighbourhood. imagine how they some would  feel with 300 autistic neighbours.

Anyways if you get this grant how much would it be for?
I think it would be wise to keep both options open.  We are not even sure how we are going fund this yet, given the problems with getting a charity status.

I still have a few doubts about either option. I also probably won't support this option unless I thought it was a spearhead of a larger goal of creating these resorts all over the world.

But, I think we should nix the artifical island idea. I agree with Gareth it is far more practical to buy a natural ilsand that build are own.
Just because you are in n.Wales, Amy, hehehe
I am doing a 180 on this idea. Now I have thought it over I think this is the only real possibility.  The other ideas are I think beyond our reach. I thought so a first when amy told me about this. But I forgot these doubts as I got hooked by the general excietment. Now reason has taken hold again I this is the only real option.

but...

I still think you may be thinking too big. I may be not understanding this right but are you saying the this resort will encompass  2 acres? I checked google and that ~8km^2! That over twice the size of your design for Autfinity Island!  or is the acre in UK different than it is in the US.

What I am envision is 10 -15 cottages housing 4-5 people each + a dinning area and admininstration buildings. I used to vacation in such a place when i was young. It was on Lake Kashagawigamog(I just wanted to say that). I think that is a reasonable first step.
