I am presently researching the legal requirements for a charitable trust in the UK and would like comments from others on this. Apart from the requirements that any charity is bound to by law, we have specific further requirements:

the ability to fundraise via sponsorships and other means which would normally be limited to commercial entities

freedom for the trustees to choose in their best judgement what island would be the most suitable for the project, with protections to take into account the best interests of the autistic community (this means we need a list of requirements for the island)

freedom for the trustees to allocate funds to other expenses included in development of the island within reason and taking into account the best interests of the autistic community

above all else, protections against donations being abused for unsuitable purposes
Maybe due to the sponsorship issue and protecting against the trustees taking the money perhaps Non-Profit status may work better?

Not sure of the rules for Non-Profit though.
Or maybe this is what would do the trick in UK terms anyway http://www.cicregulator.gov.uk/
I have begun assembling a document describing the goals of the project which should assist in choosing the correct kind of organisation and producing a constitution for it.

Bumping this, since it seems we need more practical measures like this. So, the question is:

Who is dedicated enough and has the time and resources to commit?
I'll help with any setting up, but I wouldnt trust myself to handle any monies.

I'll most certainly help with the research into islands et al though.
I'm talking about setting up a real formally incorporated charity/trust.
well, what do you need?
We need at least 2 or 3 highly dedicated individuals who are able to serve as trustees.
ah, then no. I dont trust myself that far.

I think someone should inform Zakkie, he is pretty damn impartial...
But he is not a UK citizen, I am unsure if it is possible to have foreign nationals as trustees.
Gareth, I sent you a PM on this topic.

is there a place you can look up Charity numbers?

theirs is 268369.

I personally wouldn't do a thing without checking up on it.

That of course would be just one of many many things to check up on.

If it is possible, and it's not going to pose other physical problems, I'd be happy to - but as well as the legal aspect, there'd have to be some easy way of agreeing to sign out funds remotely, etc...

Something to look into, anyways.
