Could I have Tourette's Syndrome instead of AS?
I frequently hit myself if I get too frustrated - not really that hard though, and there's a bit of family history (some distant uncle or cousin or something) with TS versus none with AS. I was 'officially' diagnosed with AS by my psychiatrist, actually, just an agreement was made with my mom, who did research.
It's quite a common thing amongst Autistics,it's a reaction to the feeling felt at a current time, there can be other physical reactions such head butting and punching the wall,or hitting out at anything,it happens to me regulary but I am in an Autistic unfriendly environment currently.
If possible try and work out the bit before it happens, whether it could be changed the next time so it doesn't bring on tics or meltdowns and whether there is any sensory overload going on.
Hi nachonaco
It is common for specific neurological problems to cluster together in an individual. For example people who have ASD, often also suffer from other neuro problems such as Tourette's, Dyspraxia, Bipolar, ADHD and so on.
If you were diagnosed by a psychiatrist your AS could quite likely be an accurate dx. Perhaps investigate if your head butting isn't perhaps anxiety or overload related. Tourette's is more of an involuntary, uncontrollable nervous disorder in the form of tics, such as eye twitching, vocal tics, hair pulling and so on. Often the sufferer wouldn't even be aware of his tics, but others notice it. The DSM also specifies to have Tourette's, at least one vocal tic needs to be present.
