Mine is from Star Trek. The Maquis (Ma key) were a group of humans -arguably terrorists- whose planets (most were settlers so it was not per se their homeworlds, but still their homes. And there were a group of American Indians that believed the one planet was a destined home for them) were handed over to Cardassia (I like to compare them to the NAZIs) in a treaty agreement. Cardassia told the humans to move -- or be removed. They refused and took up arms to fight back. It is their home, treaty or not.
The term Maquis originates from WWII. When Germany invaded France, a group of citizens took to the mountains. Also known as the fighting French, the group's name came from a dense shrub that grew in the mountains. The Maquis used guerrilla tactics to hit German supplies and otherwise sabatoged the German occupation effort. The British even airlifted in operatives and supplies. After the war, the French government publically thanked the Maquis for their efforts during the war.
Furthermore, it is also the name of a blockwatch I ran for many years.

.. "ich" is german for "I", or maybe "me". "tms" is short for tomas, which is what my folks decided to name me. It is also the first six pieces of my E-mail adress "ichtms597@hotmail.com". 597 is the number stamped in a metal plate I found close to home twenty odd years ago.
I do also have another on-line name, "Aldred". I just got a little tired of it. That is what use I at Aspergian Pride.
I have a bunch of different user names but most relate to my love of robots and concern for their treatement and well-being. (Mostly related to the fact that we aren't sure what non-human intelligence would look like and I'd rather not abuse people we don't understand-- I mean, look at us and normal thinkers. And we ARE human. I am often reminded of the TV -hooked to a computer- that suddenly began to broadcast the international distress signal through a man's house wiring when he threatened it. Unfortunately the authorities confiscated everything and took it apart to find out what was causing it...) Plus, in media living machines are most always shown as threatening or deficient in some way. I think we can relate to that as auties and aspies. Anyway, I always insist that "Robots are people, too"-- hence the RobotsRpeople2.
Oh, and the Avatar is my work. Her name is Excimer.
I have used my username for about 5 years now. Hard to explain, but it simply came into my mind from nowhere one day, and I spelt it as best I could. People often ask if I am Welsh because of it. Translated literally, it means 'Fine Grail', but I have also heard it is a cup of inspiration.
I am a very creative person, in a thoughtful way. And I used to spend hours and hours (sometimes delaying signing up for a forum for a week) trying to come up with usernames that really fit me only to find out in a year or so that my life would change or I would discover something about myself, or I would just grow out of the name. I didn't like the name that had meaning anymore because the meaning no longer applied and I'd be stuck with something that didn't fit me at all.
So now when I come up with a username I try to pick something non-descript with no meaning attached to it, which is very difficult for me because I am not a very 'nonsense' creative person. So when I'm signed up with this name, it just was the first thing that came to me.
Avatar is self-explanitory. *heh* And the tag line is a modification of a joke about a broken clock. (so I do get the creative meaning thrown in there somewhere.

timhomer2007:
tim: My first name is Tim
homer: I am an ardent Simpsons fan, and my favorite character is Homer.
2007: just part of a general pattern, the year usually denotes the year I joined a group or the year after I join.
The timhomer20xx pattern is what I use in all but two groups I am in.
Well my username which I have been using on many chatrooms. I came up with it because I love tigers and that I also like fire.
In the movie Fire Walk With Me, a prequel to the Twin Peaks TV series, there is a dream sequence in which LMFAP (the dwarf in the sharp red suit) utters the word "garmonbozia" in reference to what looks like a plate of creamed corn. We later learn that garmonbozia is pain and sorrow, abstract concepts in the real world but a staple food in the ethereal world. This forces the minions of the ethereal world to go into the real world and wreak havoc, deliberately creating pain and sorrow lest they starve. (And who on AFF doesn't have some pain and sorrow?)
I found the concept of eating pain and sorrow intriguing, and also how creepy it sounds the way LMFAP says it. (The bonus disk in the season one box set has a little documentary explaining the recording process for the ethereal speech in the TV series.)
I'm also registered as "garmonbozia" on WP but have never posted there. There's another web site where I use "garmonbozia" but I don't want to get banned from here so I won't say it here. (It's a weird news site with lots of vulgar content. Even some of the usernames there are obscene. I think some of you would like that site but there are kids here and I don't want to be the jerk who corrupts them. Unrestrained flamewars are allowed there and even encouraged. And I occasionally see curebies there. [wink] ) I tried to use "garmonbozia" on PhotoBucket and Yahoo Mail, but it was already taken on those sites, so I used "garm0nb0zia" instead (with zeros in place of the letter 'o').
Anyway, I thought I'd resurrect this thread because I've been wondering what's in a name for some of the newer users, and for that matter if there's a story behind the selection of avatars.
Aww...I've got such a boring username. It's simply my first name.
Well, in the late 1970's there used to be an electronic game named Simon... one of those games where you watch flashing colored lights to memorize the sequence, and then press buttons to see if you remembered it right. You could find a picture of one somewhere and make that your avatar. (Just an idea.)
At the time I was 12 and had to quickly come up with an email. So I chose kylo, since my name is actually Kyle and J'Lo was popular at the time (hard to admit now) and 4 because that was my hockey number and my favourite number. Every website I've ever been on is kylo4, and that email address is still being used after 5 years. There you have it, kylo4! A lot of people still call me kylo though because they think that's my name.
When I was young and learning to write my full name, I drew my grandpa a lovely drawing- couldn't tell you what it was anymore. And just like I had been learning how to do in school I wrote my whole name in the upper right hand corner, "Sarah Jo" then I went to write the rest of my name but ran out of space and finished up on the next line so only "Ke" was left.
My grandpa- a loud and boisterous old man whom I never liked because he was always so loud- received the paper and said, "who's sarahjoke?!?" and called me sarahjoke ever since. I was traumatized. I eventually got over it in college when I remarried and my new lastname made an interesting different word than joke. Never really liked gramps too much after that.
I got the nickname "Max" from a character (Max) I played on stage. I've done about twenty roles, but that's the one that somehow stuck.
The bear reference is in regard to my apparent (and oft remarked upon) similarity to a bear -- I'm a big furry guy who some find cuddly and others find dangerous.
"Meega na la queesta" is an alien-language catchphrase commonly uttered by Stitch in the movie and TV show "Lilo and Stitch". The two cool little Aspie kids I worked with a few years back (the ones whose behavior was so much like mine that it first led me to question whether I was Aspie too) both had "Lilo and Stitch" as a special interest. So I worked references to it, and imitations of Stitch, into our work. The "Meega" phrase was the one I could say best in a Stitch voice.
(The kids liked it, the (very curebie) NT supervisor didn't.....eh.
