I’m so happy to have found this site!!!
I have a nine year old son with autism and that is what makes him special and unique and I would not have it any other way. It really makes me angry when strangers treat him like he had contagious dieses, or pity him. He is a very happy little boy he is autistic and proud. I also would like to thank everyone who answered my problems with the school system. I live in Florida and if anyone has advice on fighting the school system especially with the FCAT all advises are greatly appreciated
A PROUD MOM
What's FCAT?
Florida's standardized tests. I took them this year in 8th grade; they're not that hard. Same as all NCLB Act standards.
 It's so great to hear from parents who feel this way!
Personally, I wish that autism/Asperger's
were contagious. Then, maybe we'd have a bit less ignorance of it, and people not trying to cure us of who we are.

I honestly hope that mercury is doing it. Yes, I am well aware that it is not. A guy can hope, can't he?
Hello Sunstar4. It's lovely to hear from a parent who is so proud and supportive. I'm sure with your love your son will do something remarkable for society in the future. Keep up the good work!

Actually one of the current theories is that autism is caused at least in part by a virus.
However, they haven't actually found any suspiscous virus in autistics, which means that if this is one of the causes we're not the ones who carry it.
- if autism were contagious -
People in wheelchairs are treated differently than people with other disabilities - that is because people can be born that way or they can become ill or have an accident and become that way. "Normal" people fear these types of changes: losing what they have or becoming old.
I think there is the most prejudice against people who have autism, intellectual disabilities (mental retardation), mental illness and then other physical disabilities and addictions. People with AIDS and HIV are still discriminated against but this is less now since some celebrities have champaigned for it. I have noticed that many comedy films/television shows have some character that may have autism or intellectual disabilities that are laughed at instead of being understood. If more people just understood that I am not "stupid" or "trying to be weird", and sometimes I just can not help the way I am, they would stop hurting me.
My son is also 9 and i just found this forum today.

I hate the way people avoid my son or bully him.Other kids on my road wont let him play with them because he is autistic and wants to play their games his own way and they dont like that. Their so ignorant it makes me mad and i've tried talking to the kid's parents but there just so ignorant and dont wanna know anything about autism anyways.
I love my son the Autism just makes him more special but the ignorant adults that just bully him and laugh at him make me sad. Someone once said to me that everyone has at least one autistic charateristic in them. I just wish people wouldnt judge him though.
The idea that people will treat Auties/Aspies as if they're contagious, reminds me of a bumper sticker I had. It said, "STD: Socially Transmitted Disease" Perhaps they should be working on those types of STDs, rather than hauranging those on the Autism Spectrum.
