I was reading where the current guesstimate of total Autism world population is "around" twenty million.  As compared to six billion+ NTs.  I wonder what percentages are academically "gifted" in each population?  Does anyone on this site know if any studies have been done on this?
I'm currently very interested in this personally as it looks like my daughter will be going to the college of her choice for Years 11-12, and they were saying at the information night we attended last night that their emphasis is on educational rigour.  Lauren asked me later whether or not I agreed; she thinks academically gifted people are born, not made.

i don't know about that, but i know that autistics are more likely to go to college than the general population, due to natual curioristy that most don't have, becuase they are too much into social interaction.

That is an easily bended statistic, because there are less aspies. However, the concept is correct in the fact that we are superior in intelligence to NT's and as such are much more likely to enter college. I suppose that most any aspie that could afford college could get into one, probably of their choice.

We need to differentiate between aspies and autistics. All aspies are autistic but not all autistics are aspies.  There are many autistics who can be considered mentally *** so they won't be going to college.  We discussed this in an earlier thread.  Some said the highly intelligent autistics outnumbered the *** but I and others disagreed.

Don't forget the some of us that are completely different. I think I have MSDD, which is not yet adknowledged by the mental health community, and as such am really neither aspie nor autistic.

What is MSDD?

Some aspies might actually get higher grades since they might not be distracted by social activities that some Nt students get into.  Some students do just want to study and live on campus so they can "party".  Alternatively, the Nt's usually have some sort of network where they copy each others' assignments since they do not have as much time for all their partying.  So the aspies might be doing all the work, mostly alone.  I found some people wanted to make friends with "smart people" just so they could copy or get ideas from them.

Ha!  Story of my life in High School!  When tests loomed, I had more Nt "friends" than I could shake a stick at.  They mysteriously all disappeared after the tests, only to reappear at the next one.

Multisystem Developmental Disorder. It is a PDD, but has yet to have any DSM criteria. As such, it is not really a PDD, nor is it a condition at all. Recently discovered, and there is only one real information packet pertaining to it on the entire web(that I know of, it has been a while since I searched). From what I can tell, it is a less severe form of autism and fits me much better than either AS or Autism.

Thanks.  Sounds like they are the autistic kids that people claim they can "cure".

"MSDD is thought to differ from autism in several ways. First, children with MSDD tend to respond to treatment better than children with autism."

Truth shrouded in lies. These were probably mild PDD's that they decided to experiment on, and in the process discovered this.

That's not an unfair advantage. If the other group idoesn't have anybody as smart as you, it's just their bad luck.
My problem with IQ tests is the damned math questions ;p

damn you discalculus.

There are some people I've known over the years who have tried their very best to make me think I am stupid because they are jealous that I am bright. It took years to realise what their tactics were.

You should've told Donna Williams that before she got a couple university degrees with an IQ of 67.  Rolleyes

Batman, she got the IQ test after the university degrees, not before.
