We could make one called "NTs every day" and have some of us walking around getting nasty looks, being shouted at, getting harrassed by chavs, and being told the various nasty comments from people that are so common.
Note: I am not saying ALL Nts do that, but I am sure all autistics arent like what they will put on their video.
I have seen the TV ads and they are disturbing enough. If anyone has a copy of this video or knows where to get one please inform me.
It makes the kids look like monsters. Its like a giant ad for the prenatal test.
Parents would be terrified of having an autistic kid after seeing that.
With what has happened yesterday and today this is one of the grimmest periods for autism.
I just watched this - it is truly disturbing and will be the ultimate scare tactic for women to abort.
I started to watch it, but it was too disturbing for me to finish. It's just showing the myth that autistics are monsters who don't deserve to be born, which is just sick. Who knows what new thing won't be invented now because the inventor wasn't allowed to be born?
I also couldn't finish watching it, though Gareth did.
Has anyone seen the film The Excorcist? It portrays a child changing and become hostile, agressive, screaming, and is extremely dramatic.
The videos are reminiscent of the first part of that film.
Considering the mother who killed her autistic son and herself by jumping off a bridge last month, it is entirely negligent for them to include it.
Parents may be subconciously influenced by these suggestions, like with tv ads - autistic children are too difficult to handle - feel like going off a bridge.
Do we know if the woman who jumped off the bridge could have seen this video? When was it released?
My brother has autism and I could relate to the video, as well as my mom. I think that the video will positively influence those who do not understand austim.
Sadly, I totally disagree.
I have been directly told by people who have been working for autism charities that they specifically use very negative imagery, and show everything at its worst and most extreme, in order to raise as much money as possible.
They were in the USA I hasten to add. It is much less of a problem in other countries.
Did you feel after watching that video that you understand anything at all of how the autistics who were featurered felt?
I think you can only honestly answer no.
But you did feel empathy for the parents/NTs in the video.
That is one of the fundamental reasons why it is wrong, but also the fact that it shows all negatives, and it has already been used to excuse the behaviour of a mother who murdered a three year old child.
The problem is that this video shows nothing specific to autism. It shows the average stay at home mum. On top of that it condones murder and is contributing to a further dehumanisation of autistics.
This is hate speech and propaganda, nothing more.
The debate with the curebie has been moved to NT/AS interaction as it was disrupting an important thread.
The debate can continue on the new thread.
There was a poll somewhere I think and it seemed quite a few of us were night time wetters until 8-9 or so.
bethduckie I agree that night time buzzers could really bother him. It would be a shock wouldnt it.
M do you mean the bridge comment has been edited from the video? If so, I would be happier.
You have hit on the hype point. Doctors will push it as they do the downs test now, and people believe that its an imperative.
They will not be told all the facts about autism, and god help us if the only info they know is supplied from autism speaks.
We have been having a creative burst in the chat room this evening and shared ideas and slogans, and from one of bravesj858 I made this, feel free to use it on any autism site:
