Police are investigating the fatal plunge of a 12-year-old developmentally challenged boy at an apartment building in east-end Toronto.

Police said the autistic boy was in the care of a woman who took him home with her Thursday.

She apparently left him alone for a few minutes, and when she returned, he was gone.

The caregiver looked for the boy in the apartment and hallway and learned what happened after a neighbour called 911, police said yesterday.

Const. Kristine Bacharach said the incident is being called a sudden death. The boy's name was not released, nor were the results of an autopsy performed yesterday afternoon.

This is a tragedy.

Most of the building owners in Toronto have been installing locking devices for windows.  This is not the first child to fall out of a window this year.  The problem is that some screens of the windows can pop out easily when they are pressed on.

Then the locking devices are easily removed with an allen key.  Otherwise we could not open our windows fully.
