I am sorry the movie didn't get the repsonse you had hoped for, however, I am going to say something and it is NOTHING against Jerry Newport.
Straight up, I don't like movies being made about autism, asperger syndrome.
The reason: Every time I had to tell someone about my AS, I would always get response: You don't have autism because if you did you would be like Rainman
I believe that Mozart and the Whale is about Jerry's own struggle and triumphs living with AS, however it doesn't represent others whom struggle and what is worst is we have actors portraying autistic people.
The last thing I want to hear is "hey there is no way you have AS" because you don't act like that guy Jerry Newport in Mozart And The Whale!
If movie has to be made about Autism and AS it should be a documentary about adults living with autism and AS. They should interview REAL austics and aspies so that the public can see that we are all different and not all of us are going act like Rainman or Jerry Newport.
I feel so strongly about this because when I was diagnosed with a mild form of autism, I didn't believe my pshycologist and the first thing I told him was "how could I have a mild form of autism"? I don't act like Rainman.
Imagine yourself knowing you have been different all your life. Ya never knew why and when you finally decided to seek help you still don't believe your diagnosis because of the stereotype that has been protrayed by Hollywood.
It took me a long time to accept my diagnosis and sometimes I still struggle on accepting it that is until I joined this forum and found out that I relate to all of you....
Also, one night I was watching TV and David Letterman was on (he is a late night TV talk show host) he had this young man who was around 22 years old and he had AWESOME counting skills and other gifts.
When interviewed by David this man was jovial and was able to talk well and make good eye contact with David, and then he said to David Letterman that he was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. I almost jumped out of my seat and the first thing that came to my mind was "you don't look autistic or act it...
It made me realize that I was buying into the stereo type of having autism...
